i have a terraced house with a back yard. At the back is a passage way lined with really big trees.
All day there has been 2 men out there chopping them down
They say they are from a private company and the lady at number 12 has requested them.
I like the trees, and surely they aren't her trees to chop down ??

are they chopping them down or cutting them back?
I dont think she canjust do it .
who do they belong to?

MarsLady · 21/10/2005 13:09

have you spoken to the local council? I'm pretty sure that permission has to be given to chop down trees... could be wrong though

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 21/10/2005 13:12

doesnt sound right
there are lots of restrictions eg tree preservation
can u go and talk to her?
call the council?

RottenRhubarbWitch · 21/10/2005 13:13

If the back passage is open to the public, then it belongs to the council. Tree chopping without permission is an offence. Telephone your council, ask for the Environment Dept and report them. In the meantime tell them what you have done, they might not chop down the others then.

Stilltrue · 21/10/2005 13:15

Get on the phone now to your council! Or at least nip outside and tell the cutters they need to stop now because if the trees are protected they might be fined. That'll focus their minds away from their chainsaws...Marslady is right; many trees have a preservation order on them and written permission is needed to cut them down.

Blu · 21/10/2005 13:15

Don't phone the council and say 'My back passage is open to the public', though.

coppertop · 21/10/2005 13:22

Probably also best not to say "My back passage is being pruned" either.

Unless the trees are actually on this woman's property then she has no right to touch them.

RottenRhubarbWitch · 21/10/2005 13:24

Or, there are men in my back passage!!!!

Blu · 21/10/2005 13:24

And good for you for taking action, Mugface.

JoolsToo · 21/10/2005 13:25

IIRC you have to live somewhere for 25 years for a right to light? and yes lots of trees have preservation orders on them too. Ring the council - quick!

3PRINCESSES · 21/10/2005 13:30

if you like them and you want to apply to have a TPO put on them, it's a relativelt quick and straightforward procedure. We did it at our old house to stop developers building on land behind us.
