Who "does" Halloween in a big way?

It's getting bigger every year and I do love all things witchy and ghosty and carving the pumpkin but I don't like kids that don't know us knocking on the door and I only let my kids go to my mum's and to our friends to trick or treat.

Does anyone go mad for Halloween or are we all a bit restrained about it like me?

I've just come back form shopping for halloween stuff, they go mad over it here. Bought all sorts of decorations, fantastic costumes for the children (ds is 10months and will be dressed as a devil, dd nearly 4 is a pirate) and a special pumpkin carving kit. Will be shipping it back to London next week so we will probably be the most OTT house in our street

The Americans

snap CM - they give each other cards over there don't they? Like at Christmas!!

chicagomum · 19/10/2005 18:52

I know I was behind a woman in the queue today buying in excess of 40 cards. They also have loads of "special" days, last week it was sweetie day (kind of like sweetheart I guess, but I don't know if they do valentines though?). Mind you I was quite lucky this year as we were in UK for mother's day and then back here for their mother's day so got spoilt doubly

we always have a halloween party in our pub. last year we dressed up as the adams family. Its a good laugh.

FauxVampire · 19/10/2005 19:08

We always have a party so I don't have to take them trick or treating. Halloween parties are easy because of the number of products in the supermarkets

it's bonkers isn't it?

Like that line in that (crap) Jennifer Aniston film, where someone gets wished a Happy Hallowe'en and says "I'm not a pagan, but thanks anyway!"

Pumpkins are fun though, I have to admit . Wish we could have a pumpkin-grin emoticon for October in fact.

My dear friend who buggered off and left me to live in the US just sent me a splatted witch decoration (it looks like she flew into a tree - back view, nothing gory!). I love it.

Is it more a season thing in the states though, rather than one night? Said friend says she goes and buys hay bales and corn dollies or something and decorates the porch and hangs up all kinds of what-nots, spooky stuff etc.

Question is, who can be arsed? We're already onto Christmas in this country!

I love halloween. But then I would since I'm American. DD is going to be a fairy. And she is definitely going trick or treating. I'm just disapointed that I won't get to go with her, as I'll be at work.
