Totnes is coooooooool. It's the place where alternative types live in the southwest. I quite fancy it but it's a bit small and too far from London. It's a lovely little village, gorgeous surrounding countryside and lots of brilliant health food shops.

I wish my mum bought a house there instead of boring old Dorset.

Oh, that sounds lovely.. Totnes sounds to me like a cross between Totty and Dungerness power station.. Things may not be so bad!

There are only certain places I'd be willing to live in outside London and they are ...

Brighton, Stroud, Totnes or Hebden Bridge.
There are also loads of kids in Totnes.

Agree, Totnes is lovely, though its main street is on a steep hill, which is a PITA if you have a toddler and a buggy. There are lots of alternative/health food/crystal shops. It's in a good position too, very close to the A38 which links to the M5, on a mainline train service, and is neatly situated between Dartmoor and the South Hams/coast. Lovely place!

By the way, Spidermama, we have friends who have moved to Hebden Bridge from Devon and we refer to HB as the Totnes of the North!

LOL @ Spidermama calling Totnes a village - you townie you!

Totnes is a gorgeous little town. I was brought up a few miles away and we visit often when I am at my folks. It is the alternative capital of Devon, very chilled, very pleasant. Lots of people retire there, there are lots fo kids and kid freindly cafe's and resteraunts, enough organic and health shops to shake 10 sticks at, lots of fab tea ahops with amazing cakes (don't eat too many) Roly's Fudge Shop (My sister fave - especially when they are fudge making! Lots of second hand book shops, and excellent market. And nearby is Dartington which is gorgeous as well and the Cider Press Centre which is well worht a visit. It has its own Steam Railway which runs down the river to Dartmouth.

Its nestled on the River Dart just below Dartmoor, it has a castle (mound and moat style, its apretty hilly but in a quaint way rather than knackering.

HOpe oyu enjoy it - its one of my favourite places!

Cor sharklet and ponygirl! You could write for the Devon tourist board.

Been to Totnes quite a few times - lovely town, eclectic mixture of shops, beautiful area. Wish we still had relatives down that way!

bakabat · 17/10/2005 22:56

Live nearish to Totnes and sometime when I'm feeling flash my kids wear Totnes shoes (me too :-) ) Love Totnes. And it's not a village! Lots of alternative things to do, and lots of alternative education type things as well if that's your thing.

bakabat · 17/10/2005 22:56

flash? flush maybe!

spidermama · 17/10/2005 22:58

Ok sorry for the 'village' thing. I meant it in a good way.

tallulah · 18/10/2005 19:08

My DD is at Dartington College of Arts! She loves the area. Said she didn't realise how scary Canterbury was and how much crime until she went to Totnes, and a farmer losing a bucket is news

liandme · 18/10/2005 19:29

totnes is lovely, i go to college at dartington hall and i live just down the road in ashburton which is also lovely
