How can I liven up my DD's curtains?

I'd like to make DD's bedroom into a bit more of a little girls room instead of the baby nursery that it is now but without actually redecorating. The curtains are very good quality heavy lined and they are only a few years old so i dont really wnat to replace them but they are cream waffle (with little teddy bear buttons on at the bottom which will come off easily). Any ideas please for what i can add/attach to them to brighten them up a bit. The carpet is only 2 years old so that's staying to (it's very neutral) and I've just so far bought a few lilac storage boxes for her toys etc. and I want to go for a lilac / pink scheme.
Any tips at all gratefully received. I am crap with a capital C at things like this.

TIA

ps. I have bought just one roll of a wavy stick-on border type thing which is in lilac although i have no idea exactly what i'm going to do with it (but not use it as an all over border though, I know that much)

look in a hobby store liek hobbycraft for little girly pink and purple things that you can applique/sew onto the curtains. they often have loads of stuff. e.g little fabric dolls, flowers, felt letters etc.

... or sew a big chunk of dusty pink velour fabric to the base of the curtain. (about 1/3-1/4 of the height of the curtain from the base)

You can buy really pretty, brightly coloured butterflies and clip them onto the curtains, esp good if you are crap with a needle & thread!

oh I like your way of thinking ThomBat! Any idea what sort of shops I will find those things in? I do need to visit John Lewis in the next week or so and as luck would have it i've just checked the websites and there is a John lewis in Watford and a Hobbycraft too and that's not too far from me so I'll visit both and hopefully get inspired. thanks girls. any tips for the walls etc?

I got mine from Letterbox, or urchin or something, will have a look for you.
i also got a few from the butterfly house gift shop!

There's these or these

mckenzie · 17/10/2005 22:16

thanks very much ThomBat. I've just ordered some of the GLTC ones, plus some snazzy door handles and some 'Wallies Butterfly' which I think I can stick on the walls etc. Guess we'll be having a butterfly theme huh?

Iave pencil pleat curtains in dd's room, and I have stitched on some ribbons on the pleat bit. Everybody who see's them comments on how unusal they are. Perhaps you could sew some lilac ribbons onto the curtains.

mckenzie · 17/10/2005 22:21

thanks Jenkel, that sounds like a nice idea. are the ribbons just attached at the very top?
Even I should be able to manage that huh?

Yes and tied in a bow, with quite long strands. DD has apricot coloured curtains, cream and apricot walls, cream carpet and her border has a turquoise blue in, so the bows are in turquoise. I've also tied bows to the tie backs.
