one of my favs is the online thesaurus here ... functional and very, very beautiful

i could spend HOURS on \link(www.amazon.co.uk\amazon}

\link(www.play.com\play} is one of the best places for DVDs and CDs (free delivery)

if you like blogs try 20six ... easy to kill a few hours there mooching about

google is the site i use the most - never bother with any other search engines

BUT obviously the best site on the net is mumsnet

ForestFly · 11/09/2003 20:25

Im looking at my favourites now so ill tell you some of my list! For the kids:tippi town, welcome to the true fairy godmother, ladybird, flowerfairies, boohbah (really good for them to practice with the mouse)Shopping: Please mum london, urchin, and i love sending musical personalised email cards from a site

lucy123 · 11/09/2003 20:26

well... I spend the most time on Google as I am obsessed with the positions of various websites I work with. Does that count? Plus mumsnet, obviously.

I also like sites with statistics where you can just flick from one thing to another. The WHO (I used Google last yime - www.who.com I think) is fascinating - you can compare the suicide / road accident stats in many countries... (how sad am I? )

But for chat etc. mumsnet beats all the other sites I've tried - either they don't have enough users, or they have too many and you find yourself writing a brilliant earth shattering argument, only to find the discussion has moved on by the time you click "send" (guardianunlimited is like this). Or they've been designed by idiots.

ForestFly · 11/09/2003 20:26

oh and i also like 02 to send free texts from the computer

spacemonkey · 11/09/2003 20:27

lucy123 · 11/09/2003 20:27

blimey - see what I was saying about the discussion moving on by the time you send your message? there was nothing when I replied!

lucy123 · 11/09/2003 20:30

no, the WHO website is www.who.int

abbysmum · 11/09/2003 20:31

Moonpig for personalised cards. Very good.

spacemonkey · 11/09/2003 20:33

lucy123, have you looked at alexa? it gives traffic ranking for any site - v cool!

Alexa

lucy123 · 11/09/2003 20:35

yes, toyed with it, but find the numbers a bit meaningless (aren't most of their users Korean anyway? ). I think one of our sites is 3,694,979th or something!

Love that visual thesaurus by the way - I have found a new friend!

Also received a moonpig card yesterday - they are fab.

spacemonkey · 11/09/2003 20:39

the best bit about alexa is the way it lists how many other sites link to the site you've entered and lets you look at a list of linked sites

i agree the actual traffic rankings are pretty meaningless

ForestFly · 11/09/2003 20:42

I agree, Moonpig is great, I love being able to send personalised cards although I always send them direct from the site so don't get them sent to me first to sign. I like I Resign.com for financial tools like calculating potential take home pay or the pay you need to take home to live up to your lifestyle (I know, sad 'what if' calculations have been going on in our house), and controversial maybe, but Avoid the points is about speeding tickets and stuff and might be useful to someone judging by various threads recently. Ahem, moving swiftly on, The Guardian film quiz page is good for wasting an hour. Mumsnet and hotmail are the only sites I visit every day though. Just glanced through my other favourites and nothing else that's worth sharing I don't think!

Twink · 11/09/2003 22:41

I love Gizmo & Widget for silly stuff for birthdays, stockings etc.

How Stuff Works has saved my credibility with my 4 year old

Foodwise I use these a lot organic meat
