Fleas and frontline

Hi all

Cats have fleas

Found 2 hopping earlier. Thing is - frontlined the cats 4 weeks ago, so would have thought they should be flealess. Found flea droppings on the mat they sleep on. Does this mean they're picking them up outside, and then they will die after feeding (and pooing - yuk) or that the fleas/cats are resistent to frontline?

Have heard of a new product called Frontline Plus (or Pro - something similar). Has anyone used this?

Thanks

Go see the vet and ask for stuff. It is expensive but is much better than the stuff you can buy in shops

WigWamBam · 16/10/2005 20:47

You need to keep doing the Frontline every month - the effects wear off and they can pick up fleas from elsewhere again.

Did you treat the rest of your house when you treated the cats? If not then it's quite possible that the fleas have just been waiting in your carpets and now that the Frontline has worn off they're back on the cats again.

LOL at image of fleas "hiding" in the carpet with stopwatch!

We are suffering too - they little ba*&ards are biting me too. Only me though, not DP, DD or DS. Just me, and the cats. Must get the stronger stuff from the vets meself then!

WigWamBam · 16/10/2005 20:53

Ah, you know what I mean, QV

Wigwambam. Oh NOOOOOOoooooooooo....!
Can you buy house-treating stuff from the vets too? Or do I have to go to a supermarket tomorrow? (was hoping to sleep instead after buying yet more of the frontline as dm has dd and ds 5 weeks so knackered).
Wretched things. (the fleas that is, though the cats are not in my good books anyway as keep killing things). Have noticed that seems to be more of a problem since we moved to a house with lots of carpets - we had wood floors before.

They can lie dormant in the carpets for months - you must treat the carpets otherwise you'll never get rid of them. The vets can sell you a spray to use around the house, or you can buy it from the pet shop.

QV - I'm also the only one who gets bitten. Thankfully, as would be horrified if ds and dd were bitten. Ridiculous, but would seem like a reflection on my housekeeping.

Thanks WWB. DH astonished by the good advice available on Mumsnet.

Indeed Pooka. my ankles look like i have chicken pox. Its ridiculous.

I ought to know better, i worked for a pest control company long enough

Blandmum · 16/10/2005 21:01

Don't waste your cash on the stuff you can get in the supermarkets. If you have a bad infestation (we did once it was bloody grim) it will have little or no effect. Get a spray from the vet....more expensive but much more effective. They can give you 'Prescription strenth' stuff IYSWIM.

You didnt change your name in the end then MB?

pooka · 16/10/2005 21:05

That is what the vet told him when he asked about side effects

The stroinghold would be ok after 2 hours but the frontline if they licked each others neck when grooming it would then be swallowed and therefore damage the liver

Anyway that is what he was told when he asked the vet on monday.

That is why you put it on the back of their neck so they can't wash it off but if you have 2 cats who wash each other then they can wash and therefore swallow

DH has just got STRONGHOLD for our cats for fleas

We were told NOT to use FRONTLINE cos we have 2 cats that wash each other and it will damage their livers.

So we have to use this and keep them separate for 2 hours so they can't wash each other

They don't have any at the moment but becasue they both hunt they will do soon IYSWIM

Apparently you have to also be very careful that the frontline is in date - can be extremely lethal if you use old stuff. Fortunately our cats are all (3) loners. No licking or kissing each other. Not under my roof....
