Any age should leave 1 hour between eating and swimming or carrying out an exercise programme otherwise you run the risk of cramps and vomitting.

My mum was really strict about this. I remember as a child she didn't let me go back into the sea until at least an hour had passed.

I wasn't sure that 1 hour was long enough. thanks for all the replies.

I got the impression that swimming after eating problems were a myth. Can't remember where I read it now though, will explore.

I was always told half an hour as a kid, but don't know if mum got that right

Snopes seems to think that the hour wait is an old wives tale...

mckenzie · 17/10/2005 21:14

thanks GeorginaA. That clears that up then. I remember being told as a child that I couldn't go swimming after lunch. Not sure I was warned i'd get cramps though, more that i might be sick.

our local pool advises a two hour wait!
