so sick of driving lessons

Hi, I've been learning to drive since May last year. My instructor says I'm test ready and my test is this weds but I am thoroughly fed up of learning to drive, doing all the manoeuvres etc.

If I dont pass on Weds I have yet more practice to do ready for my next test. I love driving but I just want a break from it. I want to pass on Weds and thats the end of it.

Is anyone else going through the same thing or been through it recently?

If so can anyone offer me any help as I can feel my occasional panic attacks setting in.

Even any funny stories to tell me about their test just to make things a bit less serious in my mind?
Thanks Sad

Thats what I'm worried about, if you go too soon its a fault, if you dont go its hesitancy! I feel like I am ready, I know I can drive, I am confident, drive through the town centre all the time with my mum but it just seems like they expect you to be perfect!

Did you after the test feel like all the nerves were a bit uncalled for, like how you perceive the test is going to be, was it how you imagined or did you think after what was all the fuss about, and also do you think they give you faults for silly little things or do you have to mess up quite a lot to get a serious fault?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions!

Am extremely nervous! This time tomorrow I will know if I have passed or not, I will either be ecstatic or really peed off. Sad

Ooh good luck happyatlast!

Don't worry though, they are not expecting you to be perfect.
Hesitancy will not fail you on your test unless you do it over and over (I believe the same minor fault 3 times is then a major, though not 100% sure of that)

I failed my 1st test, passed my second a couple of months later.

On my second, I was lucky enough to have my local area on my test route, so I pretended to myself I was just giving 'some bloke' a tour round where I live!

Just imagine you are giving someone a lift home and want them to see how well you drive Smile

I'm always going on about this, because I do believe in it...
2 bananas, 2 paracetamol and a squirt of rescue remedy and you're good to go!

Will have fingers crossed for you, not that you need it!

I met an elephant in the road on my test Grin. The circus was visiting the town and showing off the elephant round the local estate.

Tip for your test -keep calm when you come across an elephant!

Dropdeadfred · 08/02/2011 11:52

I passed my test on the 5th January this year!! It was not as bad as i hought it would be. I think you HAVE to make yourself beleive that you can do it. They don't expect perfection, you are actually allowed 15 minor faults!!

Just been out with my sister for a drive and drove the best I've ever driven so I'm just hoping that follows through to tomorrow!

The bountymuncher....yes 3 minor faults in the same area becomes a serious and a fail. Thats what I'm worried about, for eg: not checking my mirrors constantly and getting 3 faults for it and that results in me failing! Sad

I've been taking lessons forever too happyatlast, and my test was cancelled last month because of the weather Angry so I feel your pain.

Lots of good tips here, including pretending you're giving someone a tour! But I think I might expire from fright if I came across an elephant, scurryfunge.

Best of luck tomorrow, look forward to logging back on to read that you passed with flying colours Grin

thebountymuncher · 09/02/2011 09:01

Good luck today! Smile

how did it go??? {
Smile

happyatlast · 10/02/2011 12:26

I failed. Sad

I got 11 minors, 6 for not checking my mirrors, so that became a serious and an instant fail, and I also got a serious within the first bloody minute for turning right onto a dual carriageway and not moving straight over into the left lane, I stayed in the right lane.

There is a road near me that is similar to this road I failed on and there are two lanes coming from a minor road onto a dual carriageway, its actually the same road but a few miles down the road, and there are lights and you go in the left lane to go left or you can go straight over in that lane and to the right, and then the right hand lane which is for the right turn only. At this place near my home I always see people in the right hand lane that turn right onto the dual carriageway and stay in that lane, I always use the left hand lane and drive straight across the dual carriageway to the right but stay in the left lane.....anyway cutting a long story short, near the test centre he asked me to turn right to go onto the dual carriageway so I thought the same thing applied here, so I turned right and continued in the right hand lane until I got to the next set of lights....that was wrong apparently so yet again I have watched other people doing it and its wrong!

Last time I did that on my mock test, I followed 4 drivers in front and edged forward of a give way lane in stand still traffic, and that was wrong too, which in normal circumstances yes I would agree, I would never edge forward of a giveway line but I think drivers who have already passed think that if they dont edge forward of the line and try to get in the queue of traffic that they are going to be there all day!

So basically not to self again.....do not copy other drivers as they are not necessarily doing it the right way! Shock

Have rebooked test for 24th feb......so just gotta keep on till I pass....I cant waste all this money now by giving up. Well I will not waste all this money cos I will pass! Just dont know when I will pass thats all!!

Good luck to anyone else having their test soon......Smile

Thanks, I feel like giving up, but I'm not going to, and I'm not naive enough to believe I'm not the only one who failed first go, so many people take more than two go's at it!

I was in tears yesterday but only because of the look of disappointment on my two eldest kids faces when I told them. It killed me that did. I dont know whether to not tell them this time until I pass?

OP posts:
thebountymuncher · 10/02/2011 13:53

Sorry happy.

Sounds like you had a rough route.

I hated telling my eldest I'd failed too.
On my second I didn't tell a soul, thought I'd fail and could not face the texts I'd have to reply to.
So much nicer suprising people!

Good luck for next time, and well done you for keeping going, it's so easy to give up ( I very nearly did) Smile

SerenaJoy · 10/02/2011 14:08

Oh no, sorry happy Sad That does sound tough, and exactly the kind of thing I think I'll struggle with. I guess the moral of the story is not to pay attention to experienced drivers, because clearly they're not following the rules (which is a bit of a scary thought but there you go).

At least you don't have to wait too long until you can try again.

Best of luck for next time (will you come back and update the thread?).

happyatlast · 10/02/2011 14:12

Yes I'll let you know my result next time fail or pass! Smile

OP posts:
SerenaJoy · 10/02/2011 15:39

Fingers crossed it's the latter (sure it will be but I'll cross my fingers on 24th just in case!) Smile

Dropdeadfred · 10/02/2011 18:58

Sorry to hear that Happy. I honestly found that speaking the 'Mirror signal manouevre' in my head every time i was aked to take turn etc (as I was actually doing the routine) really helped.
So..'please take the next left' made me think 'left mirror, rear view mirror, signal and turn' if you can almost get a sing song rhythm goin as you go through it it becomes second nature. Sorry you failed - I have taken 4 tests and failed 9-10 years ago and gave up. But I passed 'first' time with this instructor on this time of taking lessons. I didn't tell anyone apart from my husband - it takes the pressure off!!
Best of luck next time!
