suggestions to keep listing fees down

  1. i never use sub heading, that in itself is about 75p. Put the brand in the main title
  2. personally never bother with borders.
  3. the price has doubled because you've listed in 2 categories. i never bother.

also a comment about the pics. i don't think they do the dress justice-use a plain background. it looks like you're a trader.
also the dress isn't hung straight on the hanger.
are you pet and smoke free? thats a big selling point.

squigglesmum · 11/10/2005 23:00

Can I ask a question too? Is there a list anywhere of how much each "thing" in the listing costs? I've been trying to work up the courage to list some stuff for the last few days, and I'm finding it hard to work out what all the costs will be.

Ta, I'd looked at that page, but not closely enough. Hadn't realised that the borders, subtitles etc were all extra, I suppose it all adds up when you put it together! Thankyou very much, I've learned something very useful tonight!
Must continue researching the kinds of things i want to list to see how simple I can get away with.

squigglesmum · 11/10/2005 23:11

Cross-posted, nellie, I'm relieved about the price breakdown!

I sell on ebay when I am trying to raise cash for a special purcase, at the moment I am trying to raise enough for a wedding outfit and have managed just under £200 this week.

I agree with Pixiefish that your picture isn't selling your item, you need a plain background, lots of people seem to photgraph on a laminate floor, i do that or use a white rug or sheet. Just means the viewer can focus on your item. I don;t think you needed all three pictures as you only get the first free. So I would have had one full length and if there were details I wanted to pick out I would have added a photo of that. The picture you have taken on the bed is not a clear view of the dress is 12p wasted, although your bedding looks very nice!

I also never use subtitles although I do use the fancy borders, I particularly like the theme park one. I don't know if it makes a difference to sales but I know when I am buying I tend to sometimes view such listings as more professional, assuming they have taken care with the advert they will have taken care of the clothes and therefore perhaps may bid more if the advert is attractive. Daft maybe but if I think that others may think the same. I also hope it may make my listing stand out.

I do like your chatty style in the listing though and ow you describe the clothes. I try and take a similar approach, and as others have said state if your home is pet/ cigarette free as this will make people feel more confident about bidding on your item.

twinsetandpearls · 12/10/2005 00:35

Too right Nellie, my dp jokes when people come round don't leave anything unnatended she'll hvae it on ebay!

twinsetandpearls · 12/10/2005 00:37

I also only list over 3 days partly because I am usually selliung so I can raise money - so I want the cash quick but also because many bidders wait until the last day or so to bid anyway so your listing just hangs arounnd doing nothing for 4 days.

twinsetandpearls · 12/10/2005 00:42

One of my listings that has just ended if it is any help

gap jeans

SoupDragon · 12/10/2005 08:15

Don't use multiple photos - if you have a photo editting package, try to add any close up details to the main photo. Also, crop out any extra, unnecessary background.

Agree the dress needs to be photographed against a plain background (darker than the dress) and arranged perfectly on the hanger.

twinsetandpearls · 12/10/2005 11:25

I would also say be careful with the autofix on the photo editing section, sometimes it is great but quite often it leaves your colours looking wierd. You can manually adjust brightness and contrast which often works better for me.

i take it you have used html to do the writing? if you look in the html tips you can see how to paste extra photos straight into the text box without paying any extra. you need to have them on an online photo album like photobucket (which is free)

gigglinggoblin · 15/10/2005 22:31

and may be worth allowing paypal? i stopped using it because of the fees but had far fewer bids

I am amazed at how well gap stuff goes for, sold a pair of jeans this week for £13 and they were sent to Canada I think so another few quid in postage. But I also sold another pair for £4, so as always with ebay it depends who is looking.

twinsetandpearls · 15/10/2005 23:55

That is a good tip gglingoblin about html and photos I will look into that.
