Kitchen drains....any ideas if this is correct

Since we moved into this house (just over a year ago) the kitchen sink/drain has smelt awful.

We have tried everything to get rid of the smell but it's still there and we even had a maggot crawl up through the drain in the sink.

Anyway my mom was here today and we were on about it and when we looked in the cupboard, the pipe from the sink, goes straight down into the floor, not out the wall and then down to drain if you get my drift.

Anyway my mom reckons that this means that bsically we have an open drain beneath our kitchen cupboard, hence the smell and maggots. She said it's illegall.

Does anyone know if this is right ???

Am off out to school now, so will check back for replies later.

You should have a u-bend which forms a barrier to smells by keeping full of water.

Sounds like a poor DIY job.

And there should be a break in the drainpipe before it goes to the mains drainage.

There is a U bend but it's not stopping the smell at all.

It's a HA property but I know they will try and say it is our fault and not do anything.
