That's it, really.

WTF are we going to do.

I started working part-time a couple of months ago, to make up the diff between his full-time and part-time wages, but my wages (even if I went full-time) don't come close to making up his.

Sorry to hear this. I've been there too, previous dp was made redundant 3 times. It's a horrible feeling. Hope he finds something else soon.

JanH · 09/10/2005 21:30

He found out late on this evening, because his boss told him - he knew on Friday, but wasn't supposed to tell, but hasn't slept since.

Actually, I've just remembered my dad was made redundant at this age. He thought he'd never work again, but he did and he was in his next job until well past retirement age. Please don't think he's too old to get another job.

allhallows · 09/10/2005 21:32

No, mine wouldn't either Jan. Is it for sure? I heard about this guy who knew he was going to be fired & faked a heart attack. It worked, apparently.

I don't know what to suggest. I'm so sorry.

gingerbear · 09/10/2005 21:32

IT skills good - sought after I reckon. If he is good then 53 shouldn't matter.

LIZS · 09/10/2005 21:33

bloody hell, when was he supposed to tell him - that's horrible .

hunkerpumpkin · 09/10/2005 21:33

Can he freelance?

JanH · 09/10/2005 21:34

Oh I know he will get something, thanks SFm (who are you??? can't work it out!)

In many ways he will be happy not to do this particular job any more, because there was a lot of pressure and he did a lot of hours (even part-time) and the phone was always ringing, but the money was quite good and he got a car too and kids aren't cheap.

I was surfermum before the Octoberfest jollity.

JanH · 09/10/2005 21:37

Oh his boss wouldn't have been the one to tell him anyway, Liz, but he was advised on Friday who was going from the dept and he couldn't believe it when they said DH.

I'm still not convinced they can function without him but as the company is being rapidly shrunk it's not a normal situation so maybe they bring someone in from outside.

misdee · 09/10/2005 21:39

oh pants hope something works out for you and dh soon.

gingerbear · 09/10/2005 21:40

That reminded me-My friend. Company shrunk, got rid of many 'staff' and reemployed as contract staff. Friend was made redundant. Now back working for them as a contract consultant on much more money. Crazy!

roisin · 09/10/2005 21:46

Oh no Jan! I'm really sorry to hear this

JanH · 09/10/2005 21:46

Ohh, gb, I so hope that will happen!

OP posts:
gingerbear · 09/10/2005 21:54

What sort of IT'ing does he do? I could talk to our IT bods at work and find out how the job market lies (I know SAP specialists can name their price)

JanH · 09/10/2005 21:58

I have heard of SAP and I don't think that's him, gb, sadly - but thank you!

He is just a jobbing knows-his-stuff IT manager - no specialisms at all.

JanH · 09/10/2005 23:11

DH is sitting in the dark downstairs removing all our numbers from his mobile.

Bastards.

At least he won't be dropped on in the morning.

Jan - so sorry to hear your news.

53 ain't old - hell its young these days and all his experience does count. I do hope he secures another position quickly, I'm sure he will - I'm sending positive vibes!

Good luck!

soapbox · 09/10/2005 23:22

Jan - what a horrible thing to happen to your poor DH

You know he will find something else and of course you have to believe in him. More now than any other time that has gone before!

People with good IT skills are always in demand so please don't be downhearted.

Unfortunately it is likely that he will only get the statutory miminum redundancy payment which won't be much - so the sooner he can get looking the better!

Give each other lots of TLC over the coming weeks - you'll both need to be each others' shoulders!

Blu · 09/10/2005 23:23

How horrible, Jan. Really sorry. It sounds very sad. Why is he sitting in the dark?

QueenVictoria · 09/10/2005 23:24

So sorry to hear that Jan. Did you get my reply email a couple of weeks ago (bout my dad and teaching in his golden years??????) Ive had a bit of a name change since then......

At least its not too much of shock but no-one likes their hand being forced. Hope things work out. Will get the info from my dad tomorrow.

Octobernow · 09/10/2005 23:29

What a shock for you - very sorry to hear this janh. I was also going to post mentioning a couple of cases I know of people being rehired on contracts when management find out that they were in fact necessary. Hope that happens to your dh (and that when they come calling he's happily employed elsewhere!).

moondog · 09/10/2005 23:32

Oh balls and buggery JanH...
Really sorry to hear this...

JanH · 09/10/2005 23:35

Oh, yes, Vic, thank you, sorry I didn't reply to it yet, I will!

There are lots of things he could do, it's just getting enough money in to pay the bills - as you said soapbox, statutory redundancy isn't much (he has been there 8+ years)...we have sort of been here before though, when he was sacked from his previous job, but we had family backup then which isn't there now...

Don't know yet exactly what he will get - he has to go in tomorrow and see - don't know if they will take phone/car/laptop, clear your desk, off you go. Yes we should be being shoulders but we aren't just now - he chose, a year ago, to switch with his assistant from full-time IT manager to part-time systems development, which suited him fine but is why he is the one to go now. So I am a bit pissed off.
