Aaarrgghhh.... have just place my first bids on e-bay - want to get ds1 some toy story stuff for his birthday - but haven't got much money, so though e-bay would be really good.

I bid for a buzz lightyear torch that's only £1.50 with an hour to go - I've just checked and the postage is £8.00!!!!!!! Feel soooooooo stupid that I didn't check first. And quite depressed that there's no way I would have spent that much on a bloody torch.

Ho hum. Just needed to vent.

Oops, the seller is actually breaking the rules then. You are not allowed to overcharge on postage.

CuriousMama · 08/10/2005 18:18

how much is your max bid? let's hope someone else bids too, plenty of time yet.

Whizzz · 08/10/2005 18:19

OOps - Yes you do have to watch P&P costs

CuriousMama · 08/10/2005 18:19

can u not retract your bid and say why? postage is way too steep

dot1 · 08/10/2005 18:21

can you retract bids? I assumed you couldn't??! If someone knows whether you can, let me know!

i just looked and the only buzz lightyear torch is 9.95 buy now?

dot1 · 08/10/2005 18:25

I've just checked and it's saying I'm still the highest bidder - must be another torch??

OP posts:
spidermama · 08/10/2005 18:25

£8 doesn't sound excessive if it's a big heavy torch. Seller is allowed to charge for packing matererials and a little for time involved going to post office.
Maybe you'll be outbid.
You could still retract your bid if there's time. I can't remember how but go into 'help' and type in retracting bids.

CuriousMama · 08/10/2005 18:25

found it now, how strange? Awww hope someone else bids for it hun. How much are they in the shops?

CuriousMama · 08/10/2005 18:26

It is excessive when other people are charging 1.95 surely?

dot1 · 08/10/2005 18:27

it's under 'buzz lightyear flashlight' and I'm still the highest bidder... I'll have a look to see how I can retract, but it's bathtime in a minute (for the kids, not me!) and then it'll probably be too late.

OP posts:
spidermama · 08/10/2005 18:29

Yes, if someone else is charging 1.95 for the same thing .... but then perhaps they've miscalculated and undercharged. I've done that before and it's very annoying.
You could contact them and ask put it directly to the seller. It might well be negotiable. No-one wants iffy feedback about postage after all.

dot1 · 08/10/2005 18:31

I've just e-mailed the seller asking if I could cancel. Oh dear - I just feel so stupid... Anyway, if it doesn't get cancelled I'll just have to pay - but will always check in future...

i think the postage may be so high because it says it is being shipped from hong kong.

ebay help page

i wouldnt wait for the seller, they may not see your message in time. if you can, i would retract your bid yourself

EvesMama · 08/10/2005 20:40

contact the seller and explain.if they are reasonable, the will cancel your bid. i have had this done twice when i first started bidding and once explained they were fine..no one wants bad feedback.HTH

EvesMama · 08/10/2005 20:41

p.s i paid 5.00 for a teeny tiny watch to be shipped from hongkong, so that doesnt sound bad considering?

dot1 · 08/10/2005 22:38

Thanks - but I won the bid (but got outbid on the thing I really wanted - a buzz lightyear duvet cover!!), so will pay...

Ended up sobbing over this tonight, as £9.00 is a lot of money at the moment, but have since had some wine so life's not so bad..!

Will learn to look a lot more closely at items!
