I have had a letter from the DVLA saying that as I have forgotten to tax my car I have been fined £40.00 plus £23.?? in arrears. The problem is my father in law sold this car for me back in February this year and gave the new owner the log book etc.
If I still don't pay then they will take me to court. What should I do? MY FIL says he will go see the man who bought it tomorrow but he did that last time when the tax prompt thing came ad he kept that saying he would sort it out.

well it is your resposibility to send the bit of the registration form with the new owners details on it to the dvla.

i don't think there is anything you can do except pay it.

If I were you I would call the dvla and tell them what has happened. make sure they know the car has been sold otherwise you may find yourself with others things turning up!

I did send the thing but i am worried that they obviously sisn;t receive it.

or did I?....oh god. part of me now thinks that the new owner is responsible for sending it to dvla- i know I did with the new car.

give them a ring and explain what has happened.
Do you have the name and address of the person you sold it to?

startingtobehalloweenylover · 07/10/2005 20:56

nope... you are definitely responsible for it! I just sold my car and I had to send it off....

yes my father in law says he knows who it was and we are going to see him tomorrow. There is a part on the back of the letter I have just received to fill those details in again though.
Will still have to pay it though. But i hope they just take the fine and done and dusted if they know who has got it. I wonder why I didn't get the log book back though if he was given it in error?

You should both send your required bit of the log book, but to be safe the person selling should absolutely send it as if the person who ends up with your car is dodgy (one of my old cars ended up in one of those shop crash things, my brother sold it for me in a pub!)you could be in real trouble if it's still registered to you, luckily I had sent the log book back

it appears that my dhsent the log book back - but they obviously have not received it as its still registered in my name. I am going to ring them tomorrow and find out exactly what to do. I think the mans name is Paul but according to my FIL friens he is on holiday till next Saturday.
