A real live one. He is flying around very fast in our central hall, upstairs and downstairs. Like a bat out of hell, one might say!

Hmmm, how to get him out???

Children very excited...

Keep him as a pet!

WigWamBam · 07/10/2005 19:27

Open all the windows and keep your fingers crossed?

Whizzz · 07/10/2005 19:29

shudder....I really hate bats (apart from the MN bat of course) if it was me I'd be screaming

basketcase · 07/10/2005 19:30

we get them now and again. We open as many windows/doors as possible to encourage them out. Normally make their own way out fairly easily. Have had to pick a couple up ( in a tea towel) and carefully put them outside to recover and fly off. Think those two had probably bumped into a few things and were a bit shocked - just crawled into the corner by the tv and the other behind the sofa..
I guess it is a wait and see - keep any pets out of the way of course!
How exciting!

Whizzz · 07/10/2005 19:31

me screaming !

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 19:34

oooh he's gone. he did some mighty fine aeronautics though and obviously his radar was working just fine because he didn't touch a thing. zoomed out the front door eventually. very very fast!
I love bats.

Has made the children's day. Have told ds1 that he came to wish him a happy birthday (he is 5 today). Big smiles all round

Aw! Happy birthday to DS, PPH! Or should that be Happy Batday?

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 21:37

This brings back memories, our cat used to bring them in when we lived at our old house. We phoned the Bat Protection people and they said to open all the doors (apparently the bat will know and be able to find it's way out, sonar?) and it would find it's way out, if that doesn't work give them a call, they are a protected species and I would imagine they would come out to pick it up for you.

LadyCodofCodford · 07/10/2005 21:40

hehe is it soupy?

LadyCodofCodford · 07/10/2005 21:40

happy birthday to C

MrsSpoon · 07/10/2005 21:41

Just read that your bat went away at 7.30, just ignore me!

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 21:52

he he MrsSpoon, thanks for your advice though.

Although the last thing in the world I would do is phone the bat protection league - if they are living in my loft I DON'T want them to know about it! annual bat inspections? no thanks

Was it wearing a hat?

shannen · 07/10/2005 21:59

Does anyone watch Malcolm in the Middle on Sky One?? V funny episode in which the house was besieged by bats the other night

gigglinggoblin · 07/10/2005 22:03

love bats, wish one would visit me

(have never heard of annual inspections btw, our bat group struggled to get permits to check boxes in a wood. most they are likely to do is give advice on bad times to do repairs. sorry to be dull, lots of incorrect info out there about bats)

no, and no fangs either (so far as I can tell - mind you it was going so fast I didn't get a good look at it's mouth...!)

my mum lived in a house in devon with 2 types of bats living in the outhouses (woodsheds etc). the bloody bat people would turn up, with no warning, and demand to be shown the bat's habitats, on an annual basis.
luckily they never found out about the ones in her loft - since it was a thatched house, if they had known about them they would have been able to prevent her from rethatching or maintaining her roof (because bats are of course much more important than people)

My parents had bats in their belfry and were told by the Bat Protection people the best time to get someone out to repair the hole where they were getting in, never had anyone visit since.

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 22:10

maybe they are particularly militant in the east devon branch...!

Scary PPH, wonder what the criteria is, what makes the difference between some being told they can close the gaps up etc and others being told to live with it and get inspected.

I'm sure Cod's a Bat Inspector.

gigglinggoblin · 07/10/2005 22:12

the bat inspector in our area is incredibly careful not to upset anyone because they dont want people to think of bats as a nuisance. she assured me they do not stop people doing repairs, rather they offer advice on best time of year to do it (so you arent killing babies) and best products to use to limit damage to bats. they check boxes in outdoor locations twice yearly (if they can get permits - not always easy) and i dont know of them ever checking houses. i have used their records for a college project and although they have details of colonies in houses they dont go round to see them. i hope the bat group near your mum have updated their ideas now!

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 22:13
