How much to pack for 11 year-old

DS1, who is 11, is about to go off to Denmark for two weeks. The first week he will stay with family friends (and attend school there, ha ha ha, even though this is in his school break) and the second week he will stay with his grandmother. He will be away for 14 days in all (yes, yes, yes). My question is: how many days' worth of socks, pants, etc would you send over? Would you assume that the friend in week one should not be expected to wash clothes for him but that the grandmother should - and therefore just send one week's worth, or should a whole 14 days' worth be sent, which will mean I need to buy some more.
On another point - why do Scottish schools have to have two weeks holiday in October!

wish ours had 2 weeks in october!
I would go to Dunnes or similar and buy 2 packs of socks and 2 of undies. Take up no room and cost next to nothing..he might not like someone else seeing his grundies!

To be frank I don't think he would care either way, but I see your point. I just have this horrible feeling that 50% of anything I send will get lost, destroyed or just not come out of the packet anyway.

Libra - where I come from the October holidays are still known as the "tattie" holidays which causes great amusement elsewhere.....

The farmers used to let the schools know when the tatties (potatoes) were ready for picking and the holiday would start straight away as all the kids used to help with the tattie picking. I would imagine that the full fortnight was needed to get all the tatties picked and has stuck. They do it all with machines now though.... not like when I was wee.

So in the good old days I would not have been running around trying to find something for him to do - I could have had him out there working...
It's just that Aberdeen at the moment seems full of hysterical working parents trying to fill a whole two weeks. I can cope with summer holidays, Christmas holidays and Easter holidays but this one is absolutely impossible to cover properly.

Libra - it wasn't that long ago!! My sister was allowed to go to the tatties when she was around 15 in the the mid eighties. By the time I was old enough 2 years later, all the farmers had machines.

Sorry, this is absolutely nothing to do with what you should pack for your son!! I'm afraid I don't have any ideas on that front

Well inspired by the 'personal responsibility' thread I have decided to let him have a go at packing. He's at home for an in-service day today and I'm at work so he has to assemble everything he thinks he should take and we'll discuss it tonight - after we've eaten the meal he's going to cook. Who said child labour is a bad thing?
