My electric shredder won't go...anyone know about these things?

I've cleared every bit of paper out of it with a pair of tweezers and can't see any obstructions when I look down it with a torch. When I switch it on it goes a tiny bit of a revolution and stops, and the same if I put in in reverse.

Anything else I can try? I really need to use it.

TIA

I'd get a bit of cardboard and put it through the shredder just where the activating (sensor) bit is. On mine it's in the middle. Mine had jammed just there the other day and only a thickish piece of cardboard (from a cereal box) would unjam it.

How can I put it through? The shredder will only go a fraction of a rotation and then stop.

I have it on my lap to look at and describe and type. Look down into the disc part. Is there a row of discs? If so, above the discs, do you have one plastic disc type bit that moves one way only ie down and back to one side? It usually meets up with a plastic bit. This is the sensor bit. Is it blocked? NB Unplug it before fiddling (but you know that anyway, I'm sure.)

Also, I regularly now put a piece of full width cereal box cardboard through to clear out bits of thinner paper that have got caught up in some of the discs.

I know the bit you mean, and it isn't blocked.

Okay, so what about the electricity connection? Is it plugged in fully? Is the plug a good one or does it rattle when you wiggle it?

anorak · 05/10/2005 17:11

Electrics fine. It goes round, as I say, a fraction of a revolution then stops, but the motor is still going as if trying to force it. It sounds exactly as if there is a blockage but there is nothing to be seen.

Could a disc have become distorted and be unable to work due to being out of shape and clashing with another disc?

anorak · 05/10/2005 17:18

Don't think so, it all looks fine. It's almost brand new and I haven't put anything dodgy through it. Could it have seized for some reason? Do they need oil or anything like that?

OP posts:
IvortheEngine · 05/10/2005 17:22

No, they shouldn't be oiled unless it says so in the instructions. Has it worked perfectly for you since you've had it up until now or is this your first go with it?

anorak · 05/10/2005 17:25

I've used it a few times and it's always worked perfectly.

I'm going to have to go and make tea now and I don't think I can be any further use (if I've been any use!) but hopefully someone else will come along who can help. Good luck!

anorak · 05/10/2005 17:32

Well thank you anyway IvortheEngine for trying to help

My pleasure, I'd like to think that I learnt something from hours of lessons on mechanics, even if that something is just a willingness to give it a go!

anorak · 06/10/2005 08:24

Anyone else around? It's still the same.

You should oil shedders...every month or so....and also use the back button[iucwim]every so ofton..

anorak · 06/10/2005 08:29

How do you oil them?

OP posts:
ebbie22 · 06/10/2005 08:48

put a littleoil in the teeth, either by the nozzlefrom the oil or dab the oilon a kitchen towel, unplug it and dab it on,only a little bit then rewind the teeth,so rather than pressing the button to shredder, press the backwards one,my dad fixes them but is on hol and cant remember when he gets back, will ask him if my advice is still no help..

ebbie22 · 06/10/2005 08:50

and yes they can over heat, should switch it off for 10mins after every hour used..

anorak · 06/10/2005 09:04

Thank you ebbie. Have been hunting high and low for the instructions, hope I haven't shredded them.

OP posts:
anorak · 06/10/2005 09:33

Have found the instructions. They say nothing about oil so I'm a bit cautious.

They also give no ideas for what happens if it won't clear and tell you to contact them for advice. Of course, there is no phone number...

ok,what make is it?will ask my ddad, when he gets bk....

anorak · 07/10/2005 09:50

Thank you ebbie.

It's a SAFE SD5X.

If all else fails I will take it into a repair place but I don't have time to do that yet anyway, so first I'll wait to hear from you when your dad gets back.

Thanks again.

Hi, again. If you still have the receipt and the instructions, I'd take it back to the shop for a refund or replacement if it was me. But then, I do believe very firmly in fair play.

ebbie22 · 07/10/2005 17:22

Wel just spoken to dad and he saidif its a little shedder[less than 50.00]than just take it bk to shop, not all shedders dont need oiling....it should be under warranty for at least a year...hth hun xx
