Tripp trapp - worst thing I broiught!

The tripp trapp, after much hesitation & investigation I brought one for my DD who is 11ths. So far, she's managed to push it right over by pushing off the lip under the table, I just managed to catch it before her head hit the floor. This now means I can't pull it up to the table as is the idea as she constantly pushes herself off. New trick is to go completely rigid whilst trying to put her in so it's impossible to get her through the baby bar without injuring her.
I also really miss not having a tray & have ended up using a plastic little chair with a tray on it which she much prefers. The TT is a lovely looking chair but I wonder if it's better for older kids.
(Reading back over this, maybe the problem is my baby & not the chair!!)

Hi Jasmum - have to say that the tripp trapp chair has been fine for us. Can't believe your 11 month old managed to tip it back, blimey, how scary! I can just about tip it back with DD in it when I'm trying to get calpol down her and tip her back in the chair t get her at an angle to take medicine!! At least yu can use it as a chair for her later in life so it's not a complete waste of money.

I love my tripp traps- both boys have used them from 6 months!! Ds2 does try to climb out of it (he's 19 months) if he gets much worse I'll have to start using the reins.....You must have a strong 11 month old (mind you both my boys were a bit blobbish on the moving front)

LIZS · 02/09/2003 16:47

Can't say I've really had that problem although dd can climb out and in. Could you lower the seat so that her feet are further below the level of the lip. Obviously I don't know what sort of table you have but under ours, oval , the lip is rectangular so that the end of the table is further away from it than the sides.

I too have a kamikaze tipper! DS has been pushing back in his since he was about 18 months, and we had a couple of near misses, and I never took my eyes of him when he was in it. (We also have a traditional wooden high chair, which he pulled down on top of himself trying to climb up from the front.) We are valuing the Tripp Trapp much more now that he is 2 and joining us for meals, with the baby-set taken off. He hasn't attempted to push back since we took the front bar off. I too missed the tray...

P.S Jasmum, I realise now that your dd is pushing with her feet. My ds pushed back with his hands from the edge of the table, so at least it was easier to spot him doing it. Do you think we should tell the manufactureres?

Jasmum · 02/09/2003 17:38

When I was investigating buying one I was under the impression that they could be pushed back at a 45 degree angle & not go over, but I nearly had a heart attack when I saw her flying backwards. We should tell the manufactuers as anybody buying one should bear this in mind - although I guess it does depend on your table & baby.
Jimjams, do you struggle to get your boys in them though?

I just thought they looked quite uncomfortable for a young baby.

ThomCat · 02/09/2003 17:55

Jude - They are meant to be great for posture. As DD had low muscle tone it was great for her as was v supportive.
Re tipping thing we have laminated floor and when DD pushed on table it just slides backwards, do you think that would make a difference to the tipping???

Jimjams · 02/09/2003 18:41

Jasmum- I always stand behind the chair to put ds2 in. I seem to remember putting them in forwards is quite hard work (ds1 uses his as a big chair now- he's 4!). I only know this as ds1 still has to go in a trolley at the supermarket and I can only get him in if I stand behind him....

tinyfeet · 02/09/2003 18:46

I realize that these are incredibly popular in Europe, but in America, they are advertised specifically for 18 months and older. I don't know if that makes a difference.

lou33 · 02/09/2003 19:36

I think you can get a tray, you should try their website.

Claireandrich · 02/09/2003 20:15

How horrid for you - I can't believe an 11 month old can unset it so much; it seems so stable.

We have used it with our DD since she was 5 months old and love it. We definitely don't miss having a tray and this was one of the reasons we chose this - we wanted DD to be sat at our table to be part of the meal more.

Jude - they win lots of awards for being good for the back and posture; in fact many of the seats produced by the Stoke company do. There is a cushion set you can get too but now DD is older we don't bother.

bundle · 05/09/2003 23:29

dd1has one and it's been brilliant for her posture and has never even been close to tipping it over. hope to use her baby cushion, back rest etc for dd2 when we buy her one.

judetheobscure · 06/09/2003 20:31

For 18 months and over fine - but not for 6 month baby surely? Also found baby slipped down them all the time (although admittedly the ones we used didn't have a cushion set); they did tip quite easily, and there's no side cushioning so not good if baby nods off.

Claireandrich · 06/09/2003 20:44

Judetheobscure - I used mine with DD from 5 months as she could sit unaided really well by then - was sitting on her own at 16 weeks. Baby definitely needs to be able sit on their own quite well before you can used one IMO.

LIZS · 06/09/2003 21:18

We used ours from about 9 months even though dd could sit well before then - we actually tried it out and bought it when she was 4 months but waited until she was feeding herself more to use it as we already had one from ds that was more suitable for a younger baby. In Europe you don't get the high back part of the baby set as you are not expected to leave a baby in to nod off (although dd has!)and they should be confidently self supporting. If there is no rail then I think use from 18 months is more appropriate. dd is 2 and I still use the rail and cushions(removed crotch strap for easier cleaning) but she loves to clamber in herself, still without tipping it.
