Where and how do i do a web page for free? I have a domain name and a holding page i think i can link to another page hosted elsewhere.

Are there places I can create a basic one page website to advertise my business? I am so daft, I even went to a night clas to learn dreamweaver to make proper full on websites but never did it. Have forgot most things but i just want a simple one.

Does your internet service provider give you any free webspace? I think with Telewest, for example, there's space available. Never tried it myself - so may be talking out of my hat!

I'm with AOl I don't know what they have. I will have look and see hopefully they have simple page templates.

I used this site

ScarySkribble · 03/10/2005 23:32

Thanks Jayzmummy I will have a look at that, are the adverts very intrusive on the free sites? I tried to find an example but can't find any with ads on.

this is te site I am slowly building on moonfruit

I havent got enough time ATM to sit and finish it off.....its very rough and needs some TLC!

ScarySkribble · 04/10/2005 00:02

That looks really good and the ads don't look like part of your site. I was worried I would have ads for on line gambling and stuff when I am trying to sell kids stuff . How easy did you find it? Have you done any webstuff before?

PS the cards a great, did you draw the girls on the kids cards?

Im hopeless on the computer and thought copying and pasting involved glitter and glue until my 11 year old told me otherwise
I found it quite easy to make a start on my site....its just having the time to finish it thats the problem...I cant make the cards and sit for hours building the site

The images on the cards are stamped and then watercoloured BTW.....my favourite cards to make as they can be personalised in any way

Lets have a look at your site then......go on....dont be shy

Just about all service providers provide more than enough free webspace for users. If you go back to your original bumpf you should find a webaddress and ftp address to allow you to upload your pages.

You can then register a proper domain name somewhere like www.freeparking.co.uk . You just enter your free webspace address in the appropriate box and it points the name to your site. You won't have any adverts with this method at all. Actually just noticed they do a 4 page site builder but never looked at it.

As for building the site - wellI use dreamweaver but its taken me a long time to learn it. Especially if you want to create a template so you don't have to create a totally new page every time. I'm not familiar with other programmes but I'm sure there are easier ones. I've heard of moonfruit before. They look really good. Are they free?

The other thing to do is to find a company who will put together a simple template for you for not much money. You then just say "Open new page from template" and all the buttons, background, title etc are in place and you can't spoil them. You just change the main bit in the middle.

One other thing if you are selling - I'm sure WAHMALL do websites from templates and they are geared up to a shop format. I think it costs £8 month. Plus they are quite a good auction site for work at home mums.

Thanks catherine, I have already registered a website address, I discovered last night I can redirect straight to my website with no welcome page or any hint that it is being redirected.

I have 6 pages done, I now need some good quality pictures to put on site as the ones i used are fuzzy on the close up.

I think because I did the Dreamweaver web design course I found this very easy. Any professional web design software is very involved and complicated. This is so simple in comparison.

I have promised my DS that he can build his own website. I know he will figure it all out quicker than me. I like the fact you can make it members only, so I might make it so just his friends can access it.

Not sure about putting a link I like being anonomous on here but i guess anyone that knows me would have sussed me by now.

Jayzmummy, I haven't seen stamps like that before, lovely. Why not get your 11 yr old to work on the website while you do the cards . Do you sell them at fairs as well?

I did mine (this one (unashamed plug) in Frontpage as it was free with MS Office. Then used Freeola to host it, as they were the only people that would support Frontpage for free.

ScarySkribble · 05/10/2005 00:23

I had know a lot of people use frontpage, can you change it online or do you make changes and upload to host? I found the frames and stuff in Dreamweaver such a palavour and its supposed to be one of the most user/ idiot friendly. you are supposed to be able to work with it as it will be seen but there was so much tweeking and insider knowledge needed to get things to work well.

I managed a 6 page website in about 2.5 hrs. Very impressed with the way it works and the pictures and graphics they have already to use.

I got some domain names via UK Reg and thought I was very clever. I now have a front page only with fasthosts and haven't got a clue how to finish it. If anyone is interested in sorting this out for me I would be truly truly grateful. I have paid out about 90 quid so far and am very very peed off about this.

ScarySkribble · 05/10/2005 00:58

£90 I used 123.reg and I think it was about £1.99 for 2 years. I have had a holding page up for ages, very limited design no links no pics, but you can redirect to a free hosted page for free. I think its quite cheap to use them for hosting too, but I am a bit unsure of all the designing and uploading to server stuff.

Fasthosts are sort of connected to UK Reg in some way. So I paid to register 2 domains which you have to pay for 2 years. Forgot that I had registed 2 (IYSWIM) and paid double, that was 30 quid. Then went with fasthosts and haven't go a clue, did background and some fancy words but am stuck...............? That was 50 quid. So 80 really but still think I should have consulted someone who had a clue first. Silly Moo I am.

ScarySkribble · 05/10/2005 01:11

Have you had a look at one of the free websites, depends what you want it for. Would adverts be a problem? Have you had a look at mine, need the spelling and wording checked.
