can i plant our xmas tree in the garden?

Will it survive? Or actually even better can I just put it in a bigger pot? It's only a small one. It seems so wasteful to give it to the council to be recycled....

You could plant it in your garden, but fir trees take all the goodness out of the soil. We had a fir tree planted in our garden by the previous owners and we had to get rid of it.

It would be much better to plant it in a pot.

I don't think it will survive as the roots wont be long enough. You cuold try though.

We put a tree on the compost heap years ago, it was one that was simply sawn off at the bottom - no roots at all. And it grew! I have no idea how I suspect this is quite unusual though.

Also FWIW someone planted a christmas tree in our old local park a few years ago and the council have left it there. It looks a bit odd, next to all the London Plains but in a good way, I'm fond of it

We kept last years tree in it's pot all year and brought it back in again,re potted this year.
It grew lots of new shoots over the summer and is back in the garden now 'til next Christmas.
Dp kept it well watered over the summer,standing it in a big dish so it never really dried out.
They look so sad waiting for the council recycling.
