is that rude.

Quoted £9,850 but really didn't want to spend more than £9-9,500.

Just not sure if it's the done thing. Dh leaves all these things to me you see!

No just say thank you very much but I didn't want to spend as much as that - I bet they will offer less!!

BROWNY · 02/10/2005 19:27

Hi again Blossomhill, hope you enjoyed yourself last night. We've just recently had a conservatory built, it's an edwardian one and measures 3 metres by 3.5 metres and cost us just over 7 and half thousand, it was done by a friend of a friend. Where about do you live, I'm in Liverpool?

katymac · 02/10/2005 19:29

Remember to assumeit will cost upto 20% more than you have banked on.....they always over run

Blossomhill · 02/10/2005 19:35

Helsi - The thing is the building is being done by one person (£5,450) and glazing by glazing company (£4,400).

Browny - Guess what? didn't go, couldn't face it. Thanks for asking. Will be my birthday in a few weeks so saving myself for that.
I am in Surrey and mine is going to be a flat roof, 2 brick walls either side, front dwarf wall and about 5m x3m. Price doesn't include electrics or plumbing.

you must ask for a discount

when we moved into this place we had to get some glazing done and we had taken an amount off the price of the house to pay for it. I got a quote which was twice the amount - I phoned them up, they asked me how much I'd like to pay for it and we bargained and eventually came down to my figure (with a few alterations). It's the done thing to argue them down a bit!

Given how busy builders are, you may find you have more luck with the glazers.

helsi · 02/10/2005 19:39

well I would say to them both that you didn't want to spend that much. Tell one of them you have a budget of 3500-4000 and the other a budget of 4000-4200.
Additonally you could always say you have had a cheaper quoe (don't tell them from who) but that you have had them recommended and would like to use them but unless they can meet your budget then you will have to refuse.

helsi · 02/10/2005 19:40

you could also say that you have a quote of £9250 incl electrics or plubming etc

QueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2005 19:40

oh gosh - yes ask for a discount - most of these sales things the seller gets a certain % if he sells at RRP, but in many cases will earn the WHOLE extra amount if he/she sells it over a certain figure (so for example if the actually RRP was £6,500, he may get £650 if he sells at that price, for £7,000 he may get £750, but at £9850 he may get over £1000 - that's all just estimates). He'll probably be more concerned at getting sale, rather than the extra money

BROWNY · 02/10/2005 19:41

Blossomhill, thought of you last night when we opened a bottle of Soft & Fruity Blossomhill lol!!.

I really think that's a crazy price!! I shopped around and got about five quotes before I settled on mine - I know it's a pain waiting for firms to come and saying the same thing over and over again, but you'd be amazed at the price difference. I was quoted between 15,000 and 8,500 - then right at the last minute a friend of a friend came to give me a quote - it included a dwarf wall, plastering inside, electrics and radiator, plus K glass. If you need any hints or tips, please CAT me. Gotta go, kids need their supper

SoupDragon · 02/10/2005 19:41

HOw many quotes have you had?

Blossombonfirehill · 02/10/2005 19:42

I just feel nervous doing it tbh

helsi · 02/10/2005 19:44

It is a lot of money to ask people especially as something quoted at nearly £10k will only cost them around £3000 to do. (My ousin sed to erect conservatories and have just asked him

Blossomhill · 02/10/2005 19:45

Thanks Helsi. What if they say no though? They are the cheapest.

OP posts:
helsi · 02/10/2005 19:51

if they say no then they must be daft. would you turn down £9500 for the sake of arguing over £350? I think you will find that they may bargain with you. If not then make them sweat. Say ok then thank you very much I will get back to you. Have a think and if you really so want them and can stretch to full price then you set the deal and say that it must be completed in x amount of time or you want something extra thrown in. I can almost guarantee that they will come down. You must never accept the first quote that anyone gives you. Its the trick of the trade. Don't fall for it.

Blossomhill · 02/10/2005 19:55

Thanks helsi. Am really scared now.....

wow i'm amazed at how cheap conserveratories are. We would a bit more space. Do you know how big you can go before needing planning consent?
