Tightening our belts with cheap toilet paper

We've done a supermarket shop for the week and bought quite a few "value" products

frozen prawns
frozen cod fillets
chopped tomatoes
diet cola
2 chickens for £4.00
mature cheddar
Tesco tea tree shampoo

but got stuck on some. Are there some things which just aren't any good when they are really cheap.

We usually shop in Tesco's, but we didn't try the Value range in any of these

Andrex toilet rolls
Kellogs cornflakes
Colgate Tartare Toothpaste
Eggs
Shampoo
Can't Believe It's Not Butter

And is Asda actually cheaper than Tesco?

I bought some toddler clothes there yesterday which were great value (including a suede effect jacket with toggles which I really liked for £12.00)but never buy weekly shopping there, should we?

would you trust your 5yr old to tip wheetabix or soup down the toilet..............

SleepySuzy · 03/10/2005 20:19

Don't know yet - she is only 21 months!!

Janh · 03/10/2005 20:20

I don't trust my 12- or 17-yr-old to tip cereal down the loo!

(17 is v picky about milk - sniffs it, pours it out, tastes it and then decides it's cheesy 12 just leaves it lying about)

MusicLover · 03/10/2005 20:21

Wat...to carry it upstairs 1st-no way! def wouldnt let them tip down the loo. Put in bin outside 1st---yuk

QueenOfQuotes · 03/10/2005 20:23

oh - our bathroom is downstairs - next to kichen - keep forgetting that "most" people have upstairs bathrooms - although we do have a toilet upstairs for the middle of the night.

MusicLover · 03/10/2005 20:24

Just pee n poo down our loo

QueenOfQuotes · 03/10/2005 20:25

she's a poet, didn't know it
makes it ryhme every time

QueenOfQuotes · 03/10/2005 20:29

There was a young girl QofQ
Who flushed all the soup down the loo
When it reached the U-Bend
Oh it was a nice blend
Her husband ? he hadn?t a clue

SleepySuzy · 03/10/2005 20:38

That's fab, QoQ. By the way look here

Tortington · 03/10/2005 20:40

tesco shampoo - not the value but their own is good
nothing beats kellogs cornflakes so we buy weetabix for the kids - becuase they dont snack on them becuase they are "boring" breakfast. still makes them last longer. and tesco weetabix are good - not the value ones but the tesco ones
toothpaste is toothpaste for gods sake woman !! nowt wrong with 35p toothpaste

tesco do a cant believe its not butter rip off called " butter - me - up" and its perfectly good. if it were up to me i would buy the cheapest shit marg going becuase i believe its al the same dh insists its not hes quite anal about it so there you go - it must be good.

however must add disclaimer *all supermarkets are capitalist pigs who make big big profits off your hard earned money so buy stuff from your local butchers or veg growers or farm shop** if you can afford it

nikkie · 03/10/2005 20:42

I use reduce to clear sections and the freezer!
morrisons R-T-C fruit and veg is excellent massive bag of courgettes(20 ish) 25p today!

QueenOfQuotes · 03/10/2005 20:49

There once was a girl sleepsuzy,
who was just a little big choosy,
but she showed some restraint,
when she bought bodypaint,
And instead got a little bit boozy

SleepySuzy · 03/10/2005 20:50

pmsl!!

munz · 03/10/2005 21:24

must admit I never bothered about what was going intot he meat and how it was treated till I worked on an organic farm - I couldn't eat meat from there! if I knew it wa one of our iycwim?

zippitippitoads · 04/10/2005 09:02

A few beefs as well about finishing one thing before starting another

eg cereal left in the bottom of the packet
starting a fresh carton of milk before the last one is finished and/or taking it into the sitting room and leaving it there
always taking too much cereal and leaving it

making cups of tea and not drinking them

We don't have any of these cheap shops locally no Morrissons, Wilkinsons, Lidl, Aldi, Poundstretcher

It must be a conspiracy we have Tesco and metro, Sainsbury's and Asda

Kelly1978 · 04/10/2005 09:31

I don't buy basics food ever now, but I do remember that biscuits were good. Other thna that I wouldn't bother. Meat is fatty. Cheese turns to water if you make cheese on toast or anything. Eggs make dp ill. Loo roll is false economy as it is so thin.

Sains own brand loo roll is really good. Tescos fruit drinks are also really good. Tried the tea tree shampoo as a cheapie to take into hosp, and it does strip your hair. We have an aldi here and they do quite a lot of brand stuff. They are also good for fruit and veg, cold meat cuts, scotch eggs.

I save money by shoppign at the Turkish food shop for fruit and veg, and eating lots of indian food, and not eatign meat all the time. It is actually a veggie week startign today (religious reasons) and I will save a fortune. We'll be eating veggie curries, dhal, paneer, black bean lasagne, veggie pies, cheesey veggie bake etc. I could def shop for all of us for under £50 a week if we ate veggie all the time.

munz · 04/10/2005 09:49

see I find with lidl's fresh I have to eat it within two day - three max, but tesco's value veggies arn't as bad (only normally get those when strapped for cash)

munz · 04/10/2005 14:04

zip - have u ever done a cheese/potato pie - apparently it's just mashed pots, cheese crated in and mashed then baked in the oven with a bit of cheese on top, and some tomatos, serves with beans, (u can add a bit of ham/cut up sausage to flavour)

my friend tells me it's v v filling and v v cheap to make.

zippitippitoads · 04/10/2005 14:36

basically a regular scone mix with choice of topping

Oven Pizza
