How would you decorate a bedroom for boy/girl sharing?

Just wondering how to arrange/decorate a huge room which I'm planning on having ds1 age almost 5, dd age 3 and ds2 age nearly 2 to share.

Looking for a neutral colour scheme if possible, but would buy posters/pictures for the walls, just some ideas of what would be appreciated! Maybe stickarounds?

Having a separate toy room so not many toys will be in the bedroom.

What about yellow ( a calm yellow)

DD's can have flowery bedding, DS's can have car/train/etc bedding

That's so steriotypical - sorry it's just logical (iyswim)

i wouldnt.
but thats because i am sooo sick of everyone doing the whole style thing. all the stuff on tv. etc etc
a light colour on the walls, white or cream. and thats it! bedroom is a place to sleep, and to study in whenolder.
but i am madame grumpy. so feel free to ignore me.

I would probably paint the walls a pale green colour and navy accessories. I personally would not bother with stickarounds but would have nice cushions/pillows on the beds that were boyish/girlie accordingly. You can get some nice Tin Tin/Baba prints that are unisex to break the walls up

We have just deocrated ds room in a neutral colour of a light beige carpet and a mustard colour wallpaper..doesnt sound nice but it is. Then jus tput up some colourful pictures and made it boyish with a car lamp and bedcover.

Nemo1977 · 01/10/2005 20:58

thats the other colour we have a pale apple green in the nursery which is also very unisex

Thanks for that, I'm feeling a bit guilty about putting mixed sexes in one bedroom, so it's good to read that it doesn't really matter about having typical boys and typical girls bedrooms.

Probably just stick cream/yellow on the walls, a couple of unisex pictures and the bedding they like - presently a mix of Thomas, fairies and cars!

Lovely - remember the less 'stuff' you put in there the more likely they are to sleep....hopefully

steffee · 01/10/2005 21:02

Ooh pale green walls sounds good too, anything to make the room look big and clean and not specific to one sex!

my friend did theres orange and yellow looks really nice

steffee · 01/10/2005 21:03

Yeah that's why I thought I'd have a separate toyroom instead of two bedrooms for sleeping and playing! And toys littered all over the house, lol

lol steffee we discussed this for when the baby is born and older which is why both rooms are unisex. That way they can both sleep in one room and mess is confined to another..lol

There a really nice colour called antique cream from leyland that in a south facing room looks a lovely shade of pale green. DD1 and ds1 share and we have this on the walls. when dd2 is old enough we will put her in there as well as long as they still all want to share. we are trying to find some picture as for opposite wall one girl picture on one side and one boyish picture. as long as you stay away from really brash colours it is quite calming. ds has a lovely throw from mothercar the cars one which is a really nice calm blue and green with applique cars on it and dd has the pinky mauve secret garden one from laura ashley. its very calming because we have avoided primary or really bright colours. we have kept the duvet covers neutral and so far it is coming along nicely. we dont have any toys in the room just a couple of books and the room is lovely and calm.

We had rainbow wallpaper from a local shop in one room (different occupants!) from when DD1 was 3 for over 10 years until DS2 was 4 or 5, when I changed it for cars. (DS2 is 12 now and still has remnants of cars - he picked a lot of it off in bed - we are going to paint it dark blue if I ever summon up the energy.)

Anyway FWIW rainbows and 1 or 2 plain coloured walls suits both sexes and most ages up to about 10.

steffee · 01/10/2005 21:50

Oooh, never considered rainbows!

That's exactly what I was planning, really neutral calming throws and plain colours, and a bookcase for bedtime books, with a few under-bed toyboxes for when they really need to play separately! Leave the bright colours for the toyroom lol

It was lovely, steffee - the wallpaper was white background, 2 different designs (one with large rainbows and 1 with small). We had 2 short walls painted soft yellow and the skirting boards were red. Our HV happened to call just as we'd finished and I dragged her up to see it, she said it was the nicest child's room she'd ever seen [proud]

steffee · 01/10/2005 21:58

Aww sounds lovely, gonna have a look for some wallpaper now. Red skirting boards sound great, can't believe I never thought of that, they'd be a good way of adding colour to the room without it being overpowering.

We have purple skirting boards in our all-white with wood-effect lino bathroom and it brightens the place up!

Definitely going to go with coloured skirting boards then.

Does anyone know if you can get washable paint in matt?

Dulux do a paint called Real Life Family Rooms which is washable and matt

steffee · 03/10/2005 15:11

Thanks WCL
