Children peeing in the street...

I'm not a great lover of this activity, but when DS1 needs to go and I am too far from home and not near anywhere with toilets, such as McD's, I try and find a drain or some appropriate place to let him relieve himself.

DS1 was nearly caught short a few days ago walking back from nursery, so I found a drain and shielding him as much as I could, let him wee.

Anyway, a girl of about 13 came past, did a double take and shouted 'Eurgh'(sp?) at the top of her voice. My instant reaction was to tell her to grow up .

However, it did get me thinking whether other parents walk past scenes like this and are sympathetic or secretly thinking that it is disgusting.

Like I said, I'm not a big fan, but understand when children are caught short.

i personally dont like to see anyone peeing in drains or bushes (but drains are worse IMO) and Im afraid I do think "eughh". Some years ago when ds was small we were heading to Stoke on Trent and there was a road crash on the motorway just in front of us and everyone had to wait until the heli-ambulance thing had taken off - we waited about 1.5 hours in the end and we were already about 30-40 mins from home when we stopped. ANyway ds needed a pee very badly but wouldnt even consider going on hte side of the motorway so we had to empty a cola bottle and put a travel blanket up at the window so he could pee in the bottle which took him ages to start. Then, just as he started, the traffic moved off and he was left not knowing what to do - finish his pee and hold the traffic up or carry on peeing whilst being a passenger on hte motorway with no seat belt! the dilemma!

PeachyClair · 30/09/2005 18:14

As a rule, I wouldn't allow DS's to do this BUT it is dependent on curcumstances- a kid who can't wait, can't wait.

troutpout · 30/09/2005 18:20

It doesn't bother me in the slightest.I had to do emergency wees a few times with ds. Not poo though!...i sort of expect that most lo's would be able hold it and get to a toilet in time for a poo?????
MT...Now dogs...thats a whole different matter...best not get me started on dogs

aloha · 30/09/2005 18:20

god, dogs pee in the street all the time. i think toddler wee is nicer than great dane wee. this isn't even an issue surely? and the girl was rude. glad you told her off - little madam.

frannyf · 30/09/2005 18:25

We have not done the toilet training thing but most mothers we know seem to carry one of those Potette things around. It's like a small portable potty which is lined with a disposable pad to catch the wee. I think if you mind the drain alternative it is a good idea to invest in one.

Working as a nanny I have helped little boys go in the street, and little girls in the countryside. Agree it is not so socially acceptable (or convenient!) for girls to wee in a drain - shame...

Has anyone ever carried a nappy for the purposes of weeing in, once the child is toilet trained? I know you are not meant to confuse them by putting them back in nappies, but it seems preferable to wet pants, very compact and could at least protect their modesty. You wouldn't have to put it on the child, just use it to catch the flow, or is this a dumb idea?

WigWamBam · 30/09/2005 18:29

I tried the potette ... dd sat on it, weed, and the wee just sailed over the front of the potette and landed on the pavement anyway.

aloha · 30/09/2005 20:43

Modesty?? In a two/three year old? Chance would be a fine thing

Gobbledigook · 30/09/2005 20:52

PMSL at great dane! Well, not really obviously, though if I did I wouldn't hesitate to do it down a drain!

Posey · 30/09/2005 20:53

Does anyone moan about dogs peeing up the side of a tree? Its only a bit of wee.
We have a potette which we usually use. Today had a quick drive in the car, ds desperate, no potty, so quick one off the kerb. Aiming for the drain but instead we got "look mummy, I'm washing the wheel!"

spidermama · 30/09/2005 20:55

I think it's fine for heaven sake! Teenagers can be rather easily grossed out.

She'll learn one day the difference between letting a toddler do it in the street, or inside his trousers.

Dogs do it all over the place fgs.

franke · 30/09/2005 20:58

I'm with the "If it's alright for dogs..." brigade. I think my newly toilet trained dd needs to 'water a tree' nearly every time we are out these days. For me it was a bit like breast-feeding in public: the first time was a bit of a self-conscious stress, but after that I never thought twice about it.

Gobbledigook · 30/09/2005 20:59

I'm much happier about children doing a wee in teh drain than I am with a dog doing up a tree and all down the path -or even worse, doing a poo. God I hate dogs.

spidermama · 30/09/2005 21:00

Aww gobb it's not the dogs you should hate. It's the oweners who fail to pick up after them.

philippat · 30/09/2005 21:03

give her a few more years and a music festival... she'll be doing it herself, you bet.

philippat · 30/09/2005 21:04

now, what about emptying your mooncup in a drain?

Posey · 30/09/2005 21:07

URGH!
