Bike for a child that can't peddle...

DS1 (4) cannot peddle his tricycle. He actuallly refuses to and we have tried over and over again to teach him.

Anyway, now he is saying he wants a 'Big boy bike' for Christmas (obviously with stabilisers).

Now, I think it's a bit silly buying him one when he can't peddle but according to DH( and other parents I have consulted), he would learn quicker on a bike as 'his feet will not be flat on the ground so he'll have to peddle'.

Does this make sense to you? Don't really want to fork out a couple of hundred pounds for something that may be sitting idle for months.

Thanks

DS2 learnt to pedal his older brother's bike at about the same time as he finally learnt to pedal his tricycle! So he might be fine.

Do you know any other little boys who have already have bikes with stabilisers that he could try out?

bikes much easier to pedal than trike

dd1 cuold never master a trike but is bike mad

nailpolish · 30/09/2005 15:52

my dd couldnt pedal her tricycle (it had the pedals on the front wheel) but after a couple of weeks she found it easier to pedal her proper bike (the pedals on the middle of the bike iyswim)

it definitely made a difference, i think their legs are in a more natural and easier position on a big bike

and they are not hundreds of pounds! dd's was only £40 from the local bike shop, a disney princess one at that!

didnt see that

couple of hundred pounds they dont call you poshpaws for nothing

Really, Enid, Poshpaws is what I aspire to be (minus paws)!

Maybe I am out of touch, but I'm sure another Mnetter said they were getting a bike for about £150 so I thought that was about the price of them. Thank god that one can get them cheaper.

Nailpolish, even at £40 I don't think a Disney Princess bike would go down well with DS1.

So, sounds like it may be a good move to get him a bike.

aha

yes some good recs on there - the boys version of the Raleigh Mollie (the Ollie) looks good.

LIZS · 30/09/2005 16:40

Agree with enid - he well may find a bike easier to pedal as he will be sat more upright. Take him to Halfords or Toys r Us and try one. We got dd a 14" Raleigh bike from Argos for around £50 so you don't have to spend a fortune and he'll grow out of it in 2/3 years tops.

My boy (8) never learnt to pedal a trike...and looked damned uncomfortable trying...but he learnt to pedal his bike really quickly. My 2 year old dd can just about pedal a trike...but she finds it hard unless they are very upright ...but can pedal a bike well already.
I think a bike might well be a good idea

I've posted a link to a good site on enid's thread - would definitely go for a bike, and the average price is between £40-£70 I reckon.
