what if its pregnant...?
How fast do they breed then?!!!

That should help everyone sleep well!

Don't know about mice, but with rats it is a little av=12 every 28 days.

Jimjams · 30/08/2003 08:21

18-22 days gestation. Wild mice have a max of about 6 babies (often less though), and they look like little dog foetuses when they're born. The mother would make a nest first of all though!

Jimjams, can you advise on the difference between rats and water rats? My two year old's favourite activity in the park at the moment is watching the rats by the duckponds! there are at least 3 families of young at different ages, and often up to fifteen tearing about at any one time. VERY exciting! But I have never seen them away from the ponds, and they do swim a lot, and always seem to be coming out from weeds at the edge: are they such a bad pest as regular rats? We do get LOOKS when ds pipes up "lets go and see the RATS mummy..."

Is that sonic vermin scaring device effective then? Every winter there's a mouse infestation, and as the whole terrace is infested (old buildings, full of holes), poison or traps are not really a long-term solution.

Blu go to

To see all about water voles aka water rats.

Be aware that ordinary rats also swim very well, and in doing so can pass Weils disease into the water via their urine. Not sure if water voles carry it.

Jimjams · 01/09/2003 22:16

sorry blu- missed your message. I suspect you are seeing actual rats (eek!!) (water voles are pretty timid) I wouldn't worry about watching them but as hmb says watch the water- weils disease isn't very nice!

Thanks Jimjams and hmb...rats they are! The pond is behind a fence, but the children's paddling pool is near by, so I think I will get on to the council, and have our little sideshow exterminated!

SamboM · 02/09/2003 13:22

mammya, yes my sil has a sonic thingy and it's brilliant apparantly

mammya · 03/09/2003 00:54

Thanks SamboM, think I might invest then.
