Daft cleaning question...

... is there any real reason why I can't use normal kitchen cleaner spray to clean out the inside of the fridge (after removing the food of course)? I have vague memory that you're not supposed to for some reason and have always just used warm soapy water in the past, but is there a real reason why not? Feeling lazy and I'm sure using cleaning spray would be quicker...

do you really want all these chemicals near your food?

hunkermunker · 30/09/2005 10:30

Use a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water - great stuff!

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 10:30

well you wipe off don't you?

Hmm, you're probably right... damn.

Hate drying it all off properly afterwards, worse than the cleaning bit

ive alwsy used cleaning spray and im not dead!

as long as you rinse it well!

QueenOfQuotes · 30/09/2005 10:33

You put food on the worktops don't you??????

You clean your worktops with the spray?????

Why not clean the fridge with the spray too??

I'm presuming that you take the food out before spraying - and you wipe afterwards.......

nailpolish · 30/09/2005 10:34

actually, can i be boring and say, please use soap and water, or bicarb as hunkers says cos its better for the environment.

also, as a nurse in a previous life, i know that using all these chemicals and anti-bacterial products is contributary to the rise of MRSA etc

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 10:40

Oh no, divisive opinion... I can't cope

That was my reasoning, QoQ ... I don't think twice about spraying the worktops...

I think in reality, I'm just trying to delay it. It's disgusting in there . Just discovered a pack of philadelphia in the back I'd forgotten about - not only does it have a nice green hairy mold growing on it, but a hitherto undiscovered red spotty mold which makes it look quite artistic.

feel ill

The Kim & Aggie surface cleanser to the rescue! 500ml of water, 1 tablespoon of Fairy, 1 tablespoon bicarb, 1 teaspoon borax, 2 tablespoons lemon juice (I add a few drops of tea tree oil for anti-sceptic purposes. Lavender works as well).

Shake it all up in a spray bottle. Spray away!! I usually use a damp cloth with it. No need to rinse.

I use this on everything - worktops, hob, fridge, etc.

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:42

i use diluted bleach & rinse it off. i'm a bit paranoid about germs.

tarantula · 30/09/2005 10:42

Id go for bicarb myself. It also helps to keep it smelling fresh.
Or get a spray bottle and fill with water/lemon juice and a drop or 2 of teatree. that works wonders too.

Or mix the two together for extra cleaning power

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:42

thanks expat! but does it disinfect?

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 10:43

The borax disinfects. So does the lemon juice and tea tree oil.

This stuff if great and can be used around babies, children, food, etc.

nailpolish · 30/09/2005 10:44

expat, i do believe that you are aggie

mrsmoons · 30/09/2005 10:45

Where can I buy Borax from?

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:46

poor expat! don't insult her like that!

GeorginaA · 30/09/2005 10:46

Oooo expat - that sounds good. Have no borax though... will put on my shopping list for next time. Can you leave in the bottle for a while, or do you make up a fresh batch each time you clean? (I tend to do a bit of cleaning every day rather than do it in one fail swoop).

Am using soapy water now and trying to feel environmentally smug to make myself feel better, but still LOATHE cleaning fridges Still, at least I don't have to defrost the freezer this time around...

ooo Borax sounds great EPIS where can I get it from?

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:48

good question. what's borax & where do you get it? is it another name for bleach?

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 10:50

You get it at Boots in the laundry section. They sell own brand washing powder as well.

The borax is sold in a white box w/blue lettering - it's a Boots own brand. It comes in two 250g pouches/box for about £2.

The actual recipe is in their book 'How Clean Is Your House', which is literally chock full of terrific, cheap cleansing products w/no chemicals you can make. And they really do the job, too.

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:53

no Boots in Switzerland. what's it made of?

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 10:54

It's a white powder.

sansouci · 30/09/2005 11:07

Cocaine springs immediately to mind. Baby pwdr? icing sugar? c'mon, expat.

expatinscotland · 30/09/2005 11:12

It should be in the same area as the washing soda. I think it's what people used to use in the olden days to disinfect before liquid bleach was readily available. You can use it as a laundry booster as well.

sansouci · 30/09/2005 11:17

okay. will have a look. thansk
