as im on a prepay with Genie which i pay £10 per month to top up to keep the 300 texts free. Dp (same contract) 7/10 need to top up more than £10 per month as its depends (as hes in a pool league club) so he had to ring round to everyone.

As the house phone bill (telewest) is too expensive as they are mainly mobiles numbers and i need to ring a 08450/0870 no to sort out the finances stuff as its all done now so dont need to ring them nos

which one so i give up? mobile or house

I'd give up the house phone - they are a rip off.

Make sure you know how to call emergency services from your mobiles though - some don't work with 999.

(Of course you'll need something for your internet access!)

We are on dialup for the internet, and it is the ONLY thing we use the house phone for. When we get broadband here (Dec-ish) I can quite see us giving up the landline altogether. We are on a contract whereby we get so many minutes for free that we very rarely pay for calls. Plus we can see who is calling us (can't do that on our landline). My parents get narked at having to ring us on the mobile because it costs them more, but they don't ring for long chats - just arranging to meet etc - so I don't see it as a major problem.

Just be aware that if you do get rid of the landline your mates probably won't call you for long cosy chats any more!

biglips, try 1899 - calls to mobiles are 10p a min weekdays and 2p a min at weekends and all landline calls only cost 3p. (This is about using it with a Telewest line.) You do have to dial a long code before you make each call but if you keep the code in your phone's memory you can use that and then dial the number you want.

Also 0845 numbers cost 3p instead of 4p, and 0870 ones 7p instead of 8p, but before you ring any more of them look them up on say no to 0870 and see if there is an ordinary number you can use instead - then it would only cost you 3p with 1899 even if you had to hang on for an hour!

Janh, you are telephone bargain queen!!!

tribpot · 30/09/2005 10:10

With broadband you can use something like Skype to make phone calls using your broadband line - and Dixons seem to be up to a similar thing.

On the other hand, you could significantly cut down on your mobile costs. If your dp has to phone a whole load of people with the same info, Virgin Mobile, for example, will allow him to set up a group and then automatically text everyone the same message - this is what I did when ds was born.

Personally I don't think 18866 can be beaten for landline calls - 2p connection fee, although 1899 has the edge for calls to mobiles. So then if your dp has to phone everyone, it's 2p a shot, no need to use his mobile at all.

Just a few thoughts.

Janh · 30/09/2005 10:15

tribpot, 18866 has gone up by 50%!!! (). So 1899 is now the best.

tribpot · 30/09/2005 10:25

Jan, not sure I can increase my phone budget to accommodate that extra penny! But you're right; even though they are still advertising a 2p connection fee on the home page, on the tariff page it says all calls are subject to a 3p connection fee.

My quarterly phone bill for calls (obv still have a BT landline to pay) is now about £3, it's great.

Maiou, you can now get caller id on your landline with BT for free, if your phone supports it. Then your parents wouldn't be so narked at having to phone your mobile - mind you, my poor old parents used to have to phone my Swedish mobile, god knows how much that cost them. Anyway, details here .

I hate land line phones, not because of the cost of calls, but because we have to pay BT for renting the bloomin wires!!
We are with homecall, our last monthly calls bill was just £4.89. BUT of course that is without the line rental from BT.
Infact I cant stand BT (you never would have guessed), they charged us £80 to 'push a button, and twiddle some wires', when we moved house. GGGRRRR......ooops sorry, going on a bit now arent I??
The thing is we use our home phone for sky tv, eg buying sports and movies etc and the internet.

If I were you, I would shop around for better mobile deals, try o2, they have great deals online. Mine is £19 month, with free phone, and 500 free texts a month!!

Janh · 30/09/2005 10:42

Ooooh, mf1t, when did you get the O2 deal? It sounds exactly what DS1 is after - is it a current one? From the O2 website or third party?

Miaou · 30/09/2005 10:54

tribpot, we can't get caller ID up here (wilds of Scotland) - we are on an analogue phone system because BT are too stingy to upgrade us to digital, as it only affects a few thousand of us over a huge area. In fact I still won't believe we are getting broadband until it happens - the Scottish Exec have had to beg and plead BT to put it in (despite them being contracted to provide it in the first place )
