Abergavenny is countryside rather than beaches. Beaches around Chepstow end of south wales are more mud flats, you need to go towards Bristol or past Cardiff for anything worth bothering with. Hereford would be your nearest shopping place (small Waitrose in Monmouth). Abergavenny ok for travel (about 20 minutes to Newport and change there for Bristol/London or 30 mins to hereford and change for midlands/North.) Roads are ok but mainly single carriageway

Would say that area around Chepstow/Abergavenny is quite expensive. my aunt and uncle have sold off a barn with planning permission and less than half an acre for a horrendous sum of money in he past few weeks.

A very good friend has just had a baby and moved to Chepstow in a gorgeous house next to the river. Bristol is less than half an hour away, she loves it

PeachyClair · 28/09/2005 16:02

We're in Caerleon and we LOVE it. We moved here in June from Somerset and we find the school is excellent, the poepl very friendly and are very happy with our choice. I was offered a place at a 'better' Uni (bristol) after visiting the one here, but the locality clinched it for me.

Dh commutes to Cribbs Causeway in uder half an hour, we shop in either Newport or at the excellent centre in Cwmbran.

The Countryside in Abergavenny etc is fab: wwas there last Friday. Barry isn't very far Beach-wise, but it's probably the worst thing about the area TBH.

I would go for it, if you're anything like us you won't regret it.

We live in the Forest of Dean which is beautiful. I think it is the best place in the world to bring children up. We walk in the woods most days.
Bristol, Newport, Hereford, Gloucester Monmouth Chepstow are all in close proximity and Weston-super-mare is only about 1.5 hours away

zippitippitoes · 29/09/2005 07:47

Well, I've been drooling over various properties ..the original idea was to move somewhere cheaper but this area seems pretty much the same as where we live now expensive!

But the alternative was to go to the West coast and although much cheaper and an area I know well, I know transport is more sparse, jobs fewer and prospects generally less if ds stays at home.

So I think we will certainly make some visits and see what we feel, it looks as though it's a bit cheaper nearer Monmouth than Abergavenny, we could go further towards Brecon but I'm thinking less job opportunities and poorer transport again.

Where are the main hospitals?

Thanks for your replies

Newport has a general called neville hall, I think Bristol has a general and we go to Gloucester Royal which has knocked down and rebuilt this year and it is wicked

marialuisa · 29/09/2005 12:26

Hereford County Hospital takes most patients from Abergavenny. Neville Hall is more of a general hospital than a big centre. Been a fuss bevause cancer patients from Wales are allowed treatments that English patients are not (different regs because of Welsh Assembly). Otherwise Newport is fairly big and there's Cardiff (campaign for new children's hospital there).

Would agree that Brecon/LLandovery way is pretty isolated and crap transport links.

marialuisa · 29/09/2005 12:26

Sorry-Neville Hall is in Abergavenny. I has my leg plastered there several times!

tegan · 29/09/2005 15:16

sorry I thought it was newport. I know my friend had her dd there 4 years ago and is having the one she is pregnant with now there too

PeachyClair · 29/09/2005 18:04

Newport is Royal Gwent. My ds1 sees various depts there for eyes, sn etc and although the parking is atrocious, the hospital is fairly up to date, efficient and I have no quibbles with it at all.

Have you looked at Caerleon / Cwmbran / Maesglas areas? We moved from Somerset and found the houses favourably (tho obviously not as cheap as other less well placed areas) priced. Caerleon is a small town, but it has a Uni and a small (no A&E) hospital (St Cadocs), fantastic schools, lots of opubs / restaurants etc, and Newport is a ten minute drive with the cinemas, sports centres, etc

zippitippitoes · 29/09/2005 21:40

I will definitely look at those too.

If you're looking here, Crook and Blight (isn't that a really unfortunate name?) were the local estate agents / rental people we used: they're gloriously old fashioned but would recommend very highly, plus they have a website.
