HELP Changing name on Passport!!

Toothache · 27/09/2005 10:53

DH and I are going to Dublin November 5th. However, DH's passport has expired and mine is still in my maiden name!

How long will it take (realistically) to get new passports????? Have we left it too late??

Feeling really miffed about having to pay the full whack to change my name... but ho hum.

Also we can't find our original marriage certificate!!! I have photocopies, will that do? HELP??

You can travel on your maiden name. You don't have to change it. But providing you can get all the relevant paperwork together, it should only take 3 weeks from arrival at the passport office. Don't know about photocopied documents, I think they specify that the docs must be the originals. You can generally get hold of an official 'copy' from the registrars office in the district you were married, they would in all likelihood accept that

At this time of year it should only take a couple of weeks, get it checked at the PO so they don't send it back because you've forgotten something.

For what it's worth, I didn't change the name in my passport until it actually needed renewing. Too cheap to pay them twice!

NomDePlume · 27/09/2005 10:56

You will prob have to pay for the copy, I recently had to pay £15 for an official copy of my birth certificate.

Toothache · 27/09/2005 10:58

NDP - Yes I can travel in my maiden name..... if the flights were not booked in my married name. Plus I'd need the original marriage certificate to travel.

3 weeks sounds okay... and do-able! DH is off to get the forms today. Thanks NDP!

Another problem though..... DH phoned to say he can't find our passports!!! Oh feck!

A photocopy is not acceptable - you need to get a replacement "official" copy from the registrar. I'm not sure if you need to change your name on your passport if you get the ticket issued in your maiden name. The ticket and passport need to match, that's all.

On the plus side, the passport applications should go through fairly quickly this time of year.

You will have to pay for the new marriage certificate. Even your original certificate was only a copy of the one in the actual registers, so there'll be no problem about it being a replacement copy. The only difference will be that it won't have your actual signatures on it.

SoupDragon · 27/09/2005 10:59

How long is there left to run on your passport?

Toothache · 27/09/2005 10:59

Soupy - The flights are booked in my married name.

LOL! How are you going to manage the actual travelling, if you can't hold down a few bits of paperwork?!

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:00

3 yrs on mine.... DH's is expired.

What's the difference in cost for changing your name and getting a new one because you've "lost" the old one? Seems ridiculous to pay full whack for 3 years!!

SoupDragon · 27/09/2005 11:11

Or can you change the name on the ticket for less than the cost of a passport?

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:13

Soupy - No I'm getting a new 10yr passport with my married name on it. It'll cost £45.

I don't think Ryanair let you change the name on the flight.

No, the cheapy airlines often don't If you haven't already, you could try contacting them to ask if you can travel on your old passport with your marriage certificate (or the copy you're going to have to get if youcan't find it!).

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:16

Thats a good idea Soupy.

Just need to find the passport and marriage certificate now! Not hopeful for DH to find it..... he's crap at searching for things.

Do you have a photo driving license in your married name?

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:21

Lol soupy.... nope, can't drive. I'm hopeless!

We have jut gpt passports for 2 of our girls and
also had to get thier names taken off of my DH's passport. We were told it would take 3 weeks, but it actually only took 2.
We had to get them new birth certificates as they only had standard ones without any parents details on them. My DH looked into applying for them on the internet, but found it would take about 7 days and would cost a fortune. So he went to the registary ofice where they were registerd and it cost him £7 pound for each one and only took 10 minutes.
