My dh says that with ds the delivery room smelt of chicken livers. It must have been all the blood/placenta etc.

For me the taste of Lucozade glucose sweets reminds me of my labour. I took 2 packets in to give me energy, ,but only ate 1 and promptly threw up. Can't bear the thought of them now.

Visiting hospitals always makes me feel a bit funny because despite lots of awful hospital memories, the smells and atmosphere always remind me of the day our son was born.

ThomCat · 27/08/2003 10:04

This smell doesn't remind me of the birth as such -just her first few weeks - nappy sacs - uggghhh, they make me feel sick now, such a sickly horrid perfumed smell and God knows why I bothered with them in the first place.

Other than that there isn't really anything in the big wide world that I associate with her birth. Possibly lavender as the whole ward smelled of it and if I see a birthing ball.
Oh and maybe iced fingers - I packed a load for us to eat while I was going through labour and found them 3 days later!!

Picture of someone breastfeed still makes me cry, as i breast feed for 5 days couldn't do it any more so painfull, every 75 mins he wanted to be feed and for 45 min at that, so i gave up, it really upset me that i gave up cryed unstop for 2 weeks, i had PND as well, but stilll picture bring back those few hour bron and the frist hellish 4 months.

Mary's Boy Child - it was playing on the CD player in the theatre (so, not my choice!) when they finally managed to deliver ds (by ventouse) and as they announced `it's a boy'. It was a few days before Christmas so they had a CD of carols playing. We didn't call him Jesus though.

And the woman who stood next to me in theatre, urging me to push, looked just like Josie Lawrence.

Don't stop moving by SClub7 (I think) was the last song I remember as they hacked me open! I remember thinking how appropriate it was. And she didn't, howled her head off as soon as she was pulled out

My association is with Tennis. I had watched nearly every match of the Australian Open (although here in Germany) and was getting set up to do some ironing and watch the quarter finals of the mens when my water broke. The next day at lunch time was when ds came and we had the radio on and every half hour they reported how the semi final between Roddick and Schuettler was going and right before the final push Schuettler won. I can't even play tennis, but at least I don't have to understand german to follow what is going on.

I temporarily lost all sense of smell once in labour, which my dh assured me was a good thing.

For a year afterwards the smell of pampers wipes and the smell of baby poo became one and the same. The smell of baby sick is the smell of babies I assure you all now.

The Queen Mothers Funeral, believe it or not! I went into hospital on the Friday night to be induced, and as nothing happenned till 2pm on Saturday, dh and I spent all morning reading and watching TV - and the only thing that was on was QM Funeral!

1993- in hospital eating tangerine angel delight- then buying loads to eat at home-then craving it in 1996 when preg again....and wrote to Birds and they said was discontinued!
1999- eating loads of mint aeros in the garden in the summer!!!

'Brimful of Asha' by Cornershop was released on the day ds1 was born, heard it loads of times leading up to the big day and it always reminds me. Plus 'Sexy Boy' by Air 'cos he was and I used to sing it to him (not much of a traditionalist I know)

The only thing that really reminds me of ds2's birth is my mum's very OTT gold car 'cos the first time I saw it was when she drove us to hospital. V. flash to take ds2 home in too!

bundle · 29/08/2003 23:11

Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong was playing on the radio as dd1 was delivered by c-section. on the ward I remember more than anything the heat and constant noise - got aprivate room when dd2 was born for a bit of peace! it was lovely, had more space and time to gaze at her. dd1's face was such a picture the first time she came to visit us - so proud

Tortington · 30/08/2003 01:36

pain lots of pain and doctors everything else is a blur.

Pimpernel · 30/08/2003 07:48

dd was born at home, so I've got some lovely associations around the house: the rows of little blue glass tea light holders, and the smell of banana smoothies. And it's nice to be able to smile at the spot where she was born (now where her changing mat is).

I can't use a certain scent of Radox shower gel/shampoo because it makes me double up as if my c-section scar is still fresh.

I've recently chucked out a Virgin Vie body spray because when I sprayed it, it took me back to DD's operation last year.

bluecow · 01/09/2003 13:12

The Cheeky Girls first song reminds me of the birth of DS as I used to sing it to him.

Lara2 · 01/09/2003 19:37

DEC 1992 - the hideous "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston played INCESSANTLY!!!!! AAAARRRGGHH!!!!!

jennifersofia · 01/09/2003 21:43

Our futon couch, and the small now permanent blood stain on the duvet that I see when I change the cover!

wobblymum · 02/09/2003 10:42

No smells or sounds that I can think of but looking at raw steaks, or better yet liver, takes me straight back to the birth. Anyone get the 'pleasure' of watching their own placenta come out?

Gem13 · 02/09/2003 11:18

I asked to. Doctor looked at me as if it was the strangest request ever.

I'd heard horror stories of it not being complete so I wanted to make sure it was all there! I was off my face at the time with the Entonox, the pain and the emotion of it all though.

boyandgirl · 02/09/2003 14:51

We asked to look at the placenta too. Didn't put us off eating liver though!

ThomCat · 02/09/2003 14:55

I 'delivered' by placenta on a birthing stool while I was holding DD so yes I did, nice huh!!!

Rhubarb · 02/09/2003 16:43

Pain - all I associate with my labour is pain! And being sick. I wanted to take my placenta home, I was quite impressed with the size of it, but dh gave me a stern look that told me to shut up!

PamT · 02/09/2003 17:04

Yes, I remember that raw meat smell too and dh told me I stank (nice of him!!!)

I also remember the sound of my perineum being cut - like someone using pinking shears on thick fabric - a sort of crunching, snipping sound.

10 years ago now.....
