put it cut-face down on a saucer and cover with cling film and put in the fridge. The cut-face will go brown but it is ok to eat.

spacecadet · 20/09/2005 22:06

i keep them in the fridge but you dont have to, if you peel it and take the flesh off the stone you can put it back in the fridge in a food bag, or take a bit of, then pop it in a food bag.

Carla · 20/09/2005 22:06

Some say keep them in the fridge, some say don't (I think it depends on whether or not you need to ripen it quickly). But in my experience, you can't keep half.

marthamoo · 20/09/2005 22:09

Eat it all at once then the problem doesn't arise (can you tell I love avocadoes?!)

I only keep them in the fridge when they are ripe.

mouseman · 20/09/2005 22:11

Cut it in half. Use the half without the stone. Wrap the stone half in clingfilm and it will be fine the next day - slight discolouration but OK. Best not to put in the fridge.

Heathcliffscathy · 20/09/2005 22:12

i keep them in fridge until i need them to ripen at which point they come out and are ripe in a couple of days. i also keep halfs in a food bag and just cut off the brown bit, the rest is absolutely fine.

i love them. so does ds.

always makes me feel better if he's had chips or some nonsense if he has some avocado as i feel he is getting nutrients!

katymac · 20/09/2005 22:13

If you mash it and have some left - you should put the stone in to the mash, to stop it going brown

monstersmummy · 20/09/2005 22:14

ok now another daft question...how do u know when its ripe??

seriously, i didn't even know what they looked like ordered them from online shopping

OP posts:
marthamoo · 20/09/2005 22:19

Press on the skin - it should give a little but still feel firmish (I don't like them overripe). If it feels very hard with no 'give' then leave it for a few days - but keep checking, when they 'go' they go very quickly. Do you know how to prepare it? I generally cut it in half, pull it apart, take out the stone (you can kind of bash a sharp knife into it and pull it out like that) then pull the skin off.

I think they're delicious but you may not like it - my dh thinks they're disgusting.

monstersmummy · 20/09/2005 22:23

its for ds2 (5.5 months) so i was going to just cut of skin and mash a la Annabel Karmel

Thank you lovely ppl for answering such stooooooopid questions!

btw marthamoo thats what they feel like now so will use them quick(got 2)

guess i should explain i have had probs foody wise for many ,many years and as a result have a HUGE fear of anything new hence the daft questions

OP posts:
katymac · 20/09/2005 22:24

DH & DD love it sliced or mashed as a side dish or with crusty bread

I'm not so keen - I don't like the texture (but I'm a bit odd with food)

It's quite high in fat (iirc)

Heathcliffscathy · 20/09/2005 22:26

ultra good for you fat tho.....omega 3 i think....

Caligula · 20/09/2005 22:27

For the next time, if you need them to ripen quickly, put them next to a banana (bananas ripen other fruit, which is why they should be kept separate unless you want the other fruit to ripen more).

Heathcliffscathy · 20/09/2005 22:28

i knew that caligula but still find it weird....how does the banana thing work?

monstersmummy · 20/09/2005 22:28

really? wow i didn';t know that about bananas!!!

would explain teh quick rotting fruit in our fruit bowl tho lol

OP posts:
marthamoo · 20/09/2005 22:29

Bananas give off bananagas (that's the scientific term) and it ripens other fruit. I need a banana tree - must post that on the loo roll holder thread

Caligula · 20/09/2005 22:42

Keep on looking at this thread and thinking avocado ought to be spelt with an R, as per my local market

avocardo. heh heh.

monstersmummy · 20/09/2005 22:43

does it have an r in it? i've never thought about it till now!

OP posts:
Caligula · 20/09/2005 22:44

No it doesn't! But I've got so used to seeing it spelt that way, that it now looks normal to me and I miss the R!

monstersmummy · 20/09/2005 22:45

avocaRdo
avocardo
avocardo

there y'are

OP posts:
Flum · 20/09/2005 22:50

Don't put avocado in the fridge, it blackens the flesh. Put it in your veggie basket or just out. If you only eat half then leave the stone in the saved half, that keeps it fresh. Don't ask me why, I have NFI.

marthamoo · 20/09/2005 22:50

Would that be avocardo's, Caligula ?

Caligula · 20/09/2005 22:52

They also sell obergines.

Caligula · 20/09/2005 22:52

And on occasion, tomartos.

Flum · 20/09/2005 22:53

Figs anyone. Bought some in W*nky Waitrose the other day. They tasted bland and dismal.

Are you sposed to peel them. DD, 18 months ate them peel and all. Later in the day it occured to me perhaps they should be peeled.
