I just finished it, I found it shocking and sad at the way pregnancy and birth is regarded in the developed countries of the world...I put it down and asked DH if I could opt for a homebirth.

Yes, Pie, I've read it, it affected me the same way. I'm even more impressed now at anyone who manages to have a home birth or no/low intervention in the USA. Very depressing stuff but listen, I wasn't pregnant when I read it, not sure it's pregnancy reading!

www - as I was reading it I thought, errrmm maybe best not when I pregnant. But damage is done now

It did explain alot to me about DH's attitude towards birth though (he's American). He is very shocked that MW handle births alone, or that I don't HAVE to have drugs. Maybe its why he's rooting for me to have a c/s too.

I did the same as you pie i.e. read it when I was pg and then thought hmmm.. that wasn't a good idea. I did find it really interesting though especially as I ended up having one of the medically assisted births she talks about.

I have also read it - wasn't pregnant at the time though. It gives you a lot of stuff to think about, doesn't it.

Found some of the American stuff as awful as I'd imagined from friends who've given birth in the states.

Anyone else find it difficult to realte to her attitude about "adapting" to motherhood? Found all the stuff about loss of self, relationship roles a bit self-indulgent.
