I need to write a letter to DS school to explain he will be absent for a week.

Is it Faithfully or Sincerely, and do I address it to His class teacher or Head master

TIA

If you know the recipient's name, it's "sincerely" otherwise "faithfully".

I think

If you are addressing it to someone by name, e.g. Dear Mrs Bloggins, then you sign it "Yours sincerely".

At my DSs' school requests for hols during term time have to be addressed to the head. What's the rule at your school?

I would address the letter to the Headmaster, and as long as you use his name, use sincerely.

I was taught that "faithfully" is for "Dear Sir or Madam".

As with sd, faithfully for an unnamed recipient, sincerely for a named.

I think this needs to be approved by the Head so you might as well address it to him.

John, Mr Smith is sincerely - small 's'

Sirs, Madam faithfully small 'f'

I would do one for each.

If you are addressing "Dear Sir or Madam" it is "yours faithfully"

If you are addressing "Dear Mr/Mrs Bloggs" it is "yours sincerely".

The easiest way to remember is the "S". Sir and Sincerely don't go together!

Not sure what the rule is, but I think as he is only in reception he is allowed 3 weeks off, but once they start year 1, no holidays during term time.

Can you email the school office and ask them to let the headmaster and the class teacher know?
