Suppose you want to paint on top of existing wallpaper (when you get round to it)

Further suppose that your DD has recently started to rip pieces off

you with me so far?

if I steam it away carefully, can I just re-paper portions and then paint on top .. will it make a difference to how the paint looks?

I've never tried, but I would have thought you'd be bound to get a kind of edge effect, I can't see how you could make a really smooth join. Well, I can't see how I could, but that doesn't mean it's not possible, of course (plumbing's more my thing, as you know)

doormat · 18/09/2005 17:18

it should work i have repapered ripped wallpaper but never painted over it but i think it shud be ok

wartybosoms · 18/09/2005 17:18

As long as you've had plenty of practice with envelopes it should be a doddle

LIZS · 18/09/2005 17:20

is it vinyl ? Could you just peel the surface and leave the lining ?

Tinker · 18/09/2005 17:20

Think you'd see the join when you paint. Even more than when unpainted, I think. You can with lining paper. Well, you can in my house!

serah · 18/09/2005 17:30

Sounds odd, but apparently if you rip the wallpaper to the approximate size and then glue it on, you won't see any edges. MIL had it done with some patterned wallpaper she had as a repair job before selling the house. You honestly couldn't see where it was.

doormat · 18/09/2005 17:34

is it unpainted at the mo if so take the piece off completely and then join at seams it will work

Twiglett · 18/09/2005 17:47

was planning on trying to remove a whole piece .. it seems to come away quite nicely from the wall .. at least for DD it does

oh well can but try

thanks

If you rip that piece off then Twiglett, and then rip a piece to approximately same shape, should work well.

serah · 18/09/2005 18:57

(unless you mean the whole piece??? floor to ceiling???? Good luck!!!)

Twiglett · 18/09/2005 19:36

I meant a whole section .. floor to picture rail .. I may as well get the plasterwork underneath seen to as there's a crack just where she's been on her destruction mission

Blimey oh adventurous one!!! I have to say that does sound the easier option if you have the same wallpaper to fill in the gap. I had visions of the floor to ceiling lark.

If you get some very very fine sandpaper and a good quality filler, you will be able to fill the seams between the wallpapers (and also sand off any overlapping)

serah said what I was going to say - if you tear a piece to cover a patch (small patch, obv) you don't get any edges at all and you can't see it after it's dry. (Works better with textured paper than flat.)
