For the last two nights my darling son thinks that 2.00am is the time to start his day. Managed to get him back to sleep after a couple of hours yesterday, but he is having none of it today. All attempts of getting back to sleep have failed, rocking, singing, boob in month at every opportunity, but, no would rather play. So we have had toast and tea and I am watching Magic Roundabout on Cartoon Network. I am just going to wash up (couldnt be bothered last night) by that time my hubby will be up to go to work. Im looking forward to a sleep later in the day, glad Im not back at work yet.

Joe, I'm sure a lot of us were up last night (even those who don't admit it) hope you have a better night tonight - me too! Pity I didn't switch the comp on we could have had a bit of a natter!!!!

Joe · 24/08/2001 06:22

Had a better night last night we fell asleep around 9.30 -10.00pm, dh put him in his cot and he woke up at 3.30 put went straight back to sleep with a quick feed and got up just before 7am. Much more civilised. We are off to my mum and dads canel boat for the weekend tonight so time to catch up and have a really good chill. Speak to you at some unearthly hour soon Riv

Infant slept much better than usual but our second child kept having bad dreams so was up and down for a while. How do you manage little ones on a canal boat? I've thought of taking ours for a ride but thought we better leave it till they are a bit older. Hope you have/had fun.

I havnt been with my son yet, I will let you know on Monday. He isnt really that mobile at the moment so Im not that worried (commando crawling and walking when you hold his hands), but we will be going back in the next month or so and he will have a small life jacket. Although it is nothing like the sea, Im sure the ducks will look very appealing over the side. You must go it is soooo relaxing, it is very slow, through lovely countryside and everyone is really friendly, I think this is because everyone is so chilled.

Riv, back from our weekend (first chance to get on computer) and we had a great time. My son absolutely loved it. We all had a great time. I would recommend you go with parents or friends that can help especially when you come to locks and things like that. We are off again in three weeks, we are using mum and dads boat and taking my husbands work collegue with their 2 year old daughter. I plan to get a backpack by then so I can take him with me when I do the locks. Cant wait. It was lovely watching my son feed the ducks over the side and he didnt attempt to go over, but I still plan to get him some kind of floatie vest for next time. A really good chilling weekend, we were all sad to leave.

Hi Joe, For some strange reason my "nickname" kept being rejected so I had to change it to Rivi(!?!) but it's same old me riv.

Your break away sounds wonderful - glad the weather was good. I think ours would love it too ducks and friendly people always help. People always seem to be friendly when you are out walking in the countryside too which I always think strange (but nice) as probably at home they never say hello to strangers they pass. It does sound very relaxing, guess the fact that you can't speed up at all helps - maybe it should be put on prescription for stressed parents (or even workforce) but guess we would all be queuing up! Ours have been sleeping much better of late but still having to get up now and again but at least not up for too long. Backpack sounds like a good idea - it will add to the fun and adventure for your son. There was something else I was going to add but a smelly nappy has distracted me and now I've forgotten... oh yes I guess your infant's sleeping wont be a problem after all the fresh air during the day then again how would you cope if it was ours have often amazed us after having energetic days away with lots of fresh air sometimes we have still had trouble getting them to sleep through or even go off to sleep - all part of the parenting fun!

Joe · 30/08/2001 09:36

Hi Rivi. Yes everyone is friendly, I think it is because they are all de-stressed. There were lots of little ones, either on the canal boats or the hire canoes or boats, lots were in their prams sat on the back. One 3 year old was having a family party on a hire boat for his birthday. Everyone waves and chats and they love the little ones. My sons normal sleeping pattern changed due to so much to see and the constant playing by grandparents. But when he did go to sleep it was a good 2-3 hours. He did his normal sleeping at night, waking once in the night, straight back off, then waking everybody up around 6am (although he did go to sleep earlier than usual). It is a very slow pace and you cant do anything other than sit back and enjoy the countryside.
Im glad you are having better nights. My son hasnt done the 3am wake and not going back to sleep bit since. He is a fidget at night and my mum is getting him a sleeping bag which Im sure will solve the problem and he will sleep. When we got back on Sunday I put him in his cot at around 10.30 (fell asleep in the car), he slept until 5.30ish, and then we sleep until 9.00am, lovely, must have been all the fresh air.

Hi Joe, Spoke too soon had a dreadful night last night not sure if it was the stormy weather both up on and off so I'm Snappy Mummy today which doesn't help anyone! I am going to look into a canal holiday for next year do you know of any websites/best places to try? Guess you don't with being able to use your parents canal boat. Our infant doesn't sleep well with sheets/blankets so I use those fleecy sleepsuits used them with our son when he was younger too but didn't find out about them until he was about 2 could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I'd known of them earlier I didn't try the sleeping bags as they had no warmth for the arms plus the legs would probably just fight with the bag bit.

Hope this gets through still experiencing problems but know it's not just me now I've seen the tech message.

Hi Rivi, Oh dear so you feel as tired as I do. Ds is teething, by the looks of it, all four top teeth, one has broken through the others are trying, so we had a restless sleep last night. Never mind we will be remembering these times with fondness when they are older. I will ask my mum about best canals for you. She has been on lots of holidays, before and since she has got her own canal narrow boat, so she will know the ones that wont have many locks etc. I will ask her tomorrow and let you know. She is off to Wales in a couple of weeks with my auntie and uncle (my auntie is in a wheelchair) I dont think she has been to the canals there yet.
We are going back in 3 weeks to my mums boat so cant wait for that (have I already told you that).

Hi Joe, Yes you have mentioned it - can tell you are really looking forward to it. If the weather isn't good do you stay put and visit nearby places with a little one? Thanks for offering to check with your mum - await any information you can get. Sorry to read about teething and sleep pain for them to come and and then a pain to keep them! Rushing to get various jobs done and my time is up!

Hi Rivi, Im up, my son has slight ezcma (sp?? its late or early) and had a little itching fit and now wont go back to sleep. He is at the moment emptying my tissue box.
I have been so hectic lately I forgot to get back to you about the canels. My mum says the canels at Rugby or Breacon Beacons (sp again) in Wales are good for first timers. She did tell me of a hire company that are really good but I have forgotten what it is and she is away on another holiday on the canels right now so will not see her for another couple of weeks so will let you know.
My ds has just asked for a feed so maybe we can go back to bed soon.
