DD2 is off to Manchester Uni at the weekend (hooray!) (not that she's leaving cos she doesn't live here but that she's getting on with her life at last) and I have just discovered - and confirmed with DD1 - that each student in a uni flat has to pay for a whole licence - presumably because each room has its own key?

Is it me or is that seriously greedy of the TVLA?

But just as a warning, they've recently had a huge recruitment drive so could well have more licence officers visiting places. And although you're ok if you don't have a licence when one of those comes round (they offer you a chance to 'buy' on with them taking your details for you - or ask you to get one soon). If after their visit an eforcement officer comes round (who may well check the wardrobes for hidden TV's ) then you're in trouble.

Does anyone know if you neeed a license to stream tv on your pc?
If not..that could be a good alternative, as I am sure most students will need their own pc in their room and space is always very limited in halls.

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:32

if you have a Broadcast card in your PC (ie can watch TV on it) you still have to pay

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:34

Just found this online...

Students are rich picking for TV licence inspectors looking for fines so they know to look for TV cards. There is a way round, however - you do not need a TV licence to use a "portable" device completely powered by batteries (provided your parents have one). Thus, if you are using a laptop and a TV tuner card/USB attachment which doesn't need connecting to a power supply then you are OK provided you are not charging the laptop while you watch TV

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:35

"rich picking" because they get paid commision for every 'sale' (TV license bought) LOL.

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:35

although the cost of a laptop if she doeasnt already have one is far higher than just paying for the license..hehhe

Marina · 13/09/2005 15:36

Also agree bundle re pensioners. I remember those days well - drinking games for Knots Landing and The Cleopatras...
Sorry for your dd2 just the same though Janh

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:36

but you can use a portable batter powered TV - as I mentioned in my 2.05 post

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:37

Thats true..but i'm sure the cost of batteries would add up to more than the license fees over the 9 months or so...

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:38

rechargeables???

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:39

Or one of those £ shops for cheap batteries LOL

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:40

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:40

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:41

maybe you shuld have a chat with that crazy lady that kicked off the massive post..
i'm sure she can teach you a few things you don't know!hahahaha

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 15:43

oh it's very easy - they're downstairs, I'm upstairs - with a stairgate inbetwee us - if one screams I'll go and see what they're up to - but they've got the TV on adn a homemade cake each

babyonboard · 13/09/2005 15:46

Sounds like they have everything they could want..!
i'm wishing I could have my in-utero baby a little further away at the moment..hehe (or at least in a different position..he's kicking me in the bladder repeatedly)
it's scaring me off going to my hairdressers appointment, not sure I want to ask to use their loo every 5 minutes..hehe
oops..getting a bit off topic now..

NannyL · 13/09/2005 21:26

They sure do...

and in my halls of residence (5 years ago) they did come around to check!

WideWebWitch · 13/09/2005 21:45

There was an ad on Radio 4 this evening Janh, saying 'Is your child going away to university?' and I thought, hang on, it's the BBC, surely this shouldn't be an ad (it's boring the M1, I have time to think things like this!) and then it carried on with 'remember, they will still need their own tv licence' - it's not fair on students, I agree.

nooka · 13/09/2005 21:53

Can't see why anyone should need a TV in halls of residence really. I don't remember anyone watching much TV at uni, except for a few marathon Star Wars sessions with everyone talking along . However given that we spent most of the time going around as a big gang getting drunk (oh great days - how on earth did I manage that! ). However you might, as a parent, feel that getting her a TV so she spends some time in is a money saver.

We had our student house checked and had to promise we were going to get a licence. I don't remeber the guy coming back, but they can check everyone with databases and detector vans now.

thought of this thread today.....

DH was out in Northampton, came home and said "it's student season" - the area he was doing today was in an area full of student lets, and he made the most "sales" in a day he's made since starting the job

Flum · 27/09/2005 23:21

Surely students are too busy studying and boozing and socialising to watch TV!!

CAn't they save the TV for when they are older?

roisin · 28/09/2005 01:28

I agree this is unfair Janh. Having said that I remember it was actually the case when I was at University - which is a long time ago now! But way back then in the dark ages hardly anyone I knew had a TV in their room anyway.

Hulababy · 28/09/2005 08:21

But aren't student's the biggest watchers of day time TV? I know when it first started Teletubbies had a big student following! And daytime TV too.

Studentss go out t night; sleep in late and then get up and watch day time TV. Oh the odd lecture might come into it too

ghosty · 28/09/2005 08:38

TVs? Laptops?

Gosh, didn't have any of that in my day. Spent my time in the pub drinking snakebites (the mere thought makes me feel sick!), chasing blerks ... and handwriting assignments ... sometimes went to the media room and used a typewriter or when I was at home in the holidays I used my dad's ultra modern new fangled thing called a word processor
