Washing a sheepskin rug??

Hi there.

Anyone ever had to wash a sheepskin rug? DD took off her nappy this morning after she woke up and wee'd all over the sheepskin rug in her bedroom. Which is pretty grim - but the worst thing is as it was first thign in the morning her wee was (well rather well fermented!) it niffs something rotten. I thought I'd use some ecover laundry liquid and was hit by hand. Anyone got any better ideas?

yes i used wool wash and you can tumble it too ] comes up really nice
think i got a specialist stuff initialy from JL but int he end used woolite

Have to contradict the fishwart, tumbling not advised except to fluff it up at the end. Must be dried flat away from direct heat - on line on warm windy day, otherwise over back of chair or on non-stripey rack.

Cool machine wash is fine and if you happen to have any glycerine in the house put a couple of tbs of that in final rinse, it's supposed to stop skin going hard.

i tumbled it on low maybe

I wash mine with a special wool wash from organic baby. I think it has something in it which keeps it supple ? Do you mean the ecover for delicates in the bottle with the purple lid ? I might try that when I run out .

To dry I get a coat hanger with the clips on each end & hang it up that way. Either in a doorway or in the garden

Comes up fine, which reminds me, must wash mine...

Actually I suspect we're all talking about lambskin fleeces - is that what your DD wee'd on, sharklet, or is it a floor rug?

sharklet · 13/09/2005 14:34

Yep its a lambskin rug - well its three together actually. I tried it in the machine - too big - even for ours which is a massive commercial toploader thing. Will have to hand wash it.

Am using the ecover delicates stuff, I don't have any wool wash stuff. But at least it is gentle.

Not sure about tumbling it - will see how it does outside - its a lovely day!

Thanks for all the advice!!

If it's too big for your machine then handwashing will be a nightmare!

Laundrette might do - you can squeeze a double duvet into one of their machines - not sure what level of control they have though, whether you can do cool/gentle or not.

Good luck anyway.

(Could you take it outside and hose it down? )

I did it in the bath in the end with the shower. Its drying flat on out hammock now. Hopefully it won't take forever - I might fluff it up in the tumble dryer when its nearly dry.

Thanks again. Will have to keep DD's nappy on in future.

Put mine in the washing machine on a gentle wash and tumble dry on a low heat. No problem. They squash up quite small. Never had a problem getting mine in the machine.

aloha · 13/09/2005 15:25

Sorry see yours is a gian super rug. Tumbledrying is fine though. Fluffs it up nicely.

sharklet · 13/09/2005 15:26

Its the type of machine it is Aloha, its a big machine, but as its a toploader it had a huge pipe through the middle so its not as easy to jam it in. I id fit it in and wash it in there - but only half of it had got wet! And it still smelt of wee! That and the fact that it is three lambskins sewn together so its pretty big.

Hopefully its alright now!
