Any suggestions on what to do in Newcastle?

A group of us (about 6) are going to Newcastle for the weekend at the end of the month. One of my friends is getting married and it is a sort of hen weekend but not in the sense of a riotous pub crawl. It has taken so long to get agreement on where to go and we have finally agreed on Newcastle. Any suggestions?

There was a dodgy smaller version in Durham toop called the Prince Bishop

dillydally · 09/09/2005 10:50

Ah the struggles you had to maintain your place in the middle of the revolving dancefloor after a few triple dodgy brand vodkas

What sort of thing do you want? There is a new 'boutique hotel' opening in Jesmond Dene this month that would probably do a nice meal for you all. Will try to find the link.
Personally I find the city centre a bit much on weekend evening (showing my old and middle aged tendencies) though the quayside is definitely worth a look. There are various eateries along the quayside - Malmaison might be quite nice, also the top floor of the Baltic has a restaurant.
you could try and see what's on at the Sage (new concert venue - quite eclectic) that weekend.

Gosh, strange to think of you being so close - any free time for a meet up ?

elliott · 09/09/2005 10:55

www.jesmonddenehouse.co.uk/ for the new hotel

the boat is hilarious - all the drunken girls on the dancefloor (revolving) and the blokes standing a foot away ready to catch them as they fall off in vain attempts to gracefully exit!

and whats the name of that big italian restaurant? we always go there when in newcastle

elliott · 09/09/2005 10:58

www.thesagegateshead.org/ for the sage.

But might be wide of the mark here. Just thinking of nice things I'd do if here as a visitor - I'm not really into bars and clubs, feel a bit past all that now! There are a few pubs we frequent up from the quayside.
Give me a few clues to work on!

Hi Elliot - don't think there will be time for a meet-up. The prganisation for theis weekend is actually doing my head in. We ruled out London because of bombs. Thought about Paris but there wasn't agreement. Then when we did agree the cheap flights had gone. Then decided Newcastle would be good as DF had been before and liked it.
I think quayside would be best. I think we are looking at some shopping (not too much 'cause I hate it), intersperced with coffee shops/wine bars. A show/concert of some description would be good but I reckon we are too late to book that. DF gets married in November. We are hoping to go to Newcastle 24/25 September.

How long are you goign to be there? I think quayside is good during the day - there is a slug and lettuce and various other eateries and it is a good place to wonder and look at the bridges and buildings. For evening on a Sat I would possibly avoid and go somewhere less busy, but otoh you may want to soak up the atmosphere!
Not much use on shopping I'm afraid but all the usuals are there. Cafe Royal is nice for a break.

Think we will be able to get booked into the Copthorne. Heard it's lovely.
