Petticoats and Slips - Do they exist or are they a figment of my imagination?

OK. Explanation first. Back in the olden days when I went to school (70s/80s) I had a very uncomfortable and itchy woolen school skirt. Luckily my mum had a solution - a petticoat or waist slip - cheap, plain, polyester I guess (cotton for posh, but needed ironing) and suddenly I could sit down without having to endure the horrid itchy skirt.

Fast forward 25 years or more. 5 year old DD1 started new school today with obligatory itchy, woollen skirt. I have scoured the town - all main shops - scoured the internet (Google etc) and have had no luck in finding a simple child's petticoat (except fancy frothy wedding ones).

Am I going mad? Doesn't anyone make them anymore? Does anyone have any idea where I can find one? Anyone at all? Anywhere at all? Otherwise DD1 will suffer in her new skirt for the next 12 years....

Thank you all!

Can't help except to say I used to have them too!

M&S do adult ones - wonder why no children's.

Woud be easy to make if you know anyone who sews?

Have you tried the cheapy shops like Peacocks, Primark, QS or B Wise.

Sounds like the sort of thing they would sell - esp Peacocks.

Adult's ones yes, but kid's ones, not a clue I'm afraid!

PrettyCandles · 07/09/2005 13:36

I've never seen basic child-size ones either, and was also in the same position as you as a child! But they're very easy to make, especially if you have use of a sewing machine - do you?

In the meantime, couldn't your dd wear summer uniform?

Ethel Austin ?

I seem to remember that's where all mine came from as a kid.

Thanks for the suggestions. Have tried all 4 shops via telephone - no joy - and also checked all of the online catalogues (very poor selection of underwear overall). I don't sew nor know someone who does. Bother.

Had the exact same problem when my dh bought my 4 year old a see thru dress from Spain - found them on ebay in the end!

Hulababy · 07/09/2005 13:50

I have seen them in posh children's shops - but only full oness to nunder big posh dresses.

What do you bet Enid ;-) ?
I'm off to John Lewis at Cribbs Causeway this Saturday - so will certainly check.

I did try eBay too - but only found bridesmaid's petticoats..

Will continue looking after this next conference call. Must go and do some work!
