I happen to luuurve the municipal lavatory look so brush off all toilet talk!

I'm telling you, this style will not date.
All that buff coloured stone/silly limestone bowl like sinks with angular tap stuff is so over doncha know!!!

puff · 06/09/2005 22:07

I agree with aloha re going with white if you are thinking of selling soonish. You can always use warm coloured accessories.

moondog · 06/09/2005 22:09

Soory, quick hijack....Puff,how was your holiday? Did you set up a separate thread in its honour?

aloha · 06/09/2005 22:09

Moondog and Puff are right. Listen to the voices of reason

If you go for brick shaped tiles, then you could stack bond them rather than brick bond them for a more contemporary look (in other words, joints all line up rather than being staggered, IYSWIM....). I haven't checked the other links that bhave been posted, but try bathstore.com for good comtemporary looking sanitaryware and brassware.... they do good things that are modern but not too fashionable (could end up being last years look next year otherwise...). Good value also. F&B paints great, just go for a bathroom finish (satin or silk something or other, name escapes me at the moment) that copes better with steam etc. Builder won't put in chandelier because of elec regs for bathrooms (steam/water + open fittings = danger)...
How about some glass on the walls? I know that IKEA now sell v good value glass splashbacks for kitchens in certain panel sizes, might they work in your bathroom? In a few key areas perhaps? Last idea, you could try a single wall in a really vivid colour (tile, paint) as a sort of statement.... ok, I'll shut up now

If builder won't do it, put in chandelier yourself! I have, currently, on very attractive swinging single lightbulb (moved in a few weeks ago - still many boxes to unpack!) and we are all still alive!

Do you live in a period house? I've just put wood panelling in ours (half way up the walls topped with a dado) and painted it a traditional duck egg. Above that we have off white ("parchment")brick shaped tiles which are also fairly traditional looking. I think that would go with black and white floor tiles.

aloha · 06/09/2005 22:13

Nah, chandeliers v lovely and esp lovely, slightly oversized in bathrooms. Unless you plan to swing from them while naked and wet, but with one toe on the ground (oo-er!) then cannot imagine why not safe.

I think your bathrooms are ideal beety. Bet your house sold for big premium.

moondog · 06/09/2005 22:15

meggymoo, builders talk crap. Mine laughed openly at all my ideas (especially my paint colours) then weeks later, admitted that it all looked 'very nice'.

orangina · 06/09/2005 22:15

beetroot... oh dear for your friend! It's all a question of what you like I suppose (think i'll just slink off now with a cloud of no style hanging over me...). WIll say it looks better with tiles that don't have a bevelled edge but something a little more straight... (desperately trying to redeem herself ...)
Must now try to find a pic with them looking good!

Beetroot, you're just being sweet now ! Meggymoo, stack bonded brick tiles will look yucky ( a la Beety's friend) with t&g boarding under dado rail I fear.... will definitely have to be more contemporary. Found nice image of what I was trying to describe on worlds end tiles website (www.worldsendtiles.co.uk/, sorry can't do links yet), but you have to go to products and then ceramic tiles..... all lovely and white, v minimalist looking.

With tongue and groove plain square white tiles are nice. Or even... more tongue and groove. Or...no tiles at all!
