Breast Cancer Charity - I am *disgusted*

One of dh and my friends is setting up an estate agency business and one of their selling points is going to be a charity donation. They will charge you a flat 1% fee and then for every house they sell will make a £50 donation to charity.

They designed a page with a big pink ribbon logo and decided to give the charity a ring and let them know what they are doing.

They are not allowed to use the pink ribbon logo on their advert without a £20000 donation up
front!!

I'm sorry but FFS!!!!!

Blimey! Wonder why?

soapbox · 04/09/2005 22:13

I think it is to stop people using the charity as a 'selling point' but never paying any money to them.

But £20k sounds a bit steep to me

starlover · 04/09/2005 22:13

that's ridiculous.
qutie frankly i would give to another charity! are there any local charities who might benefit more from theirm oney?

Can't they give to cancer research instead, and use the yellow ribbon? Then it would go to all forms of cancer.

starlover · 04/09/2005 22:17

irishbird is right. you;re getting a lot of promotion and baically free advertising from the charity...

i do think looking for a local charity would be a really good idea. how about a local housing charity? bit more apt?

misdee · 04/09/2005 22:17

british heart foundation ?

Nightynight · 04/09/2005 22:21

Twenty thousand is a bit steep though.

They have decided on a local charity called Butterflies which gives children from poorer backgrounds holidays, but am really really at the breast cancer charity.

They tried to point out that in the long run they could end up giving so much more than £20k, but still couldn't convice them.

i agree 20k is steep... but it is basically free advertising and promotion for the company iyswim, by using such a well-known logo...

Jimjams · 05/09/2005 20:41

I think a local charity is better anyway.

Steppy1 · 05/09/2005 20:49

...hi Lilibet I spoke to probably the same charity as have been actively involved in raising funds through my Funky Mamas event (www.funkymamas.co.uk)...one event we raised over £600 and received pretty much the same response...however I have linked up with the local branch to ensure that any funds raised would go to provide support for local women ( I have a contact that has terminal breast cancer at the minute so feel passionate about contributing to that cause) but was still miffed that they weren't really happy to do anything unless you gave the donation (I'll never be in a position to do that !!!!) Still I continue to raise funds with a controbution from all of my ticket sales...and also know that monies go to the local women....

Would have to agree with the other comments. I had Breast Cancer 4 1/2 yrs ago and it was a local charity at the hospital that offered me the most support in various ways.
