Dp has had a bright idea today.... he is thinking of investing in a static caravan on a site somewhere in the southwest of england.
I agree it may be a good idea, weekends away etc, but want honest opinions on wether its worth all the hassle??

anybody have any comments etc??

thanks

looked into it - yes I think it can be worth the hassle- one thing to watch out for though- a lot of sites don't allow vans more than 10 years old on their sites, so if you bought an 8 year old van you would have to buy another very quickly. Also check yearly site fees,

We didn;'t go for it because ds1 won't settle in one- he can't cope with them. DH's friend at work has one though so we may try their's one day and see if things are getting better....

Now I want a campervan (but they're more expensive!!)

Me and my mum were on about this the other day, but the caravans are quite exspensive so we binned the idea.

If you can afford it though then i think it is def worth it. I know if we had one we would use it alot and rent it out so it would be great for us.

thanks, i didnt know that about the 10 year limit, so thats good info to know.
have found awebsite with brand new ones within our budget on the sites that we are interested on, and have sent off for some more info on them.

just think its a good way of getting away in the uk without costing a fortune as we would rent it out on weeks that we wont be using it.

My brother had one for years on a very quiet campsite that had no 'age limit' on the caravans. He more than got his moneys-worth and then sold it for only a little less than he paid for it.

I think you have to investigate the site/ costs and your ability to visit it often enough to be worth doing.

Anteater · 04/09/2005 21:12

Yes I own a few!
I would say the most important thing is to get the right site.. the van choice comes later.
If you plan to use the van regularly then it becomes cost effective. If you use it twice a year then they are a waste of cash. CAT me if you want more info.

My sister bought a static on a "nice" site in West Sussex and was "promised" that for a fee of £150 per year, they'd take care of renting it out for her. She was hoping to make her site fees back which are high. She gave them one week that she didn't want it rented out as they were planning to go and luckily she decided to call them 2 days before, to find out that they'd let it out for that week! They had also only managed to let it out for 2 weekends over the whole summer (apart from the dates they weren't supposed to). So just be aware that unless you have a guaranteed number of friends/familythat would want to rent it every year, you can't guarantee to get your site fees back in rent.

tiredemma · 04/09/2005 21:16

there is no way we would rent out via the site to anybody, luckily we both have big families so luckily can rent out to them.

ant- where are yours? can you recommend any good sites somerset/devon/cornwall??

Ukcampsite.com has a great search facility for campsites in the UK. they link to web pages and give user reviews

As suggested UKcampsite.com is a good start. Use in conjunction with the Alan Rogers good camp site guide.
Always visit the site at their worst time, ie a bank hol or busy weekend...Lots of certain types of people can ruin your perceived idylic location. We are in the lakes, and do enforce a 10 year rule.
The longer the lease, the harder the site is finding selling new vans.
Find out if you decide to go before 10 years if you can sell the van on to a 3rd party and if the site takes a cut..
Make sure the site is a member of the BHHPA, you will then have certain rights and a way to pursue any problems you may have..

tiredemma · 05/09/2005 11:40

thank you, will look at those sites, and i may contact you ant with further questions (think its called pestering!)

our friends have a caravan on doniford bay at watchet and thats the one thats appealing to us the most.

i think that we are 80% going to go for it, fortunatly my eldest starts school next week so we dont have to fork out extortionate nursery bills and so have spare cash every month now. thats the only way we would be able to afford to do it.

thanks again for making me aware of the 10 yr rule.
