Can anyone tell me..
are the sloes ready to pick now (if not, how do I know when?)
and
how do I then make sloe gin? I know it involved cheap gin and sloes, but anything else? what do I do with them?

ooh I wanna know too. Sloe gin is Yummy! hic!

HunkerSorryGiraffeTrollMunker · 03/09/2005 12:53

I would imagine it just invoved infusing them for a length of time but know no more.

baggybear · 03/09/2005 13:05

Not sure if sloes are ready yet (will find out) but making it is easy but time consuming.

You have to pierce the sloe berries because the skin is quite tough and you need to help the let out the flavour. But once you have pierced them just put them in a large sealable jug or demijon (sp) and leave them. The longer you can leave it the better.

Thats how we made it and it was yummy!!!

baggybear · 03/09/2005 13:05

Obviously in a jug with with the gin ! missed out that bit!!

baggybear · 03/09/2005 13:07

they are ready where we are now. they need to be v dark purple and slightly soft to touch.

use approx 1lb sloes to 1 bottle gin and add 14oz sugar. pierce sloes with a fork first as baggybear said then leave them to it. ours have been brewing for about 2 years now

HunkerSorryGiraffeTrollMunker · 03/09/2005 14:29

maybe the frost thing has the same effect as putting them in the freezer?

Have to say ladies, I was so pleased to come across this thread. I shall await Anorak's answer with interest.

Where I live, there are loads of Sloe berries on the tress right now and my daughter asked me what they were, so I told her and also told her you use them to make Sloe gin and she said how?

How????!!!!!!!!!! Now I know! I shall be off picking them tomorrow!

SoftFroggie · 04/09/2005 19:57

Bump for anorak!
Those sloes are calling out to me.

Do you guys mean I make the stuff then have not to drink it for years?

LOL at this thread - saw the title and thought "bet anoraks posted in there". Am sure she'll be along very shortly. I have supped her sloe gin and it really is fab.

Hi! Just got email from Kayleigh ordering me to read this thread!

I've already made mine. It's an annual ritual for me, and some of my friends and relatives will already be waiting for Christmas to come so they can collect their bottle!

The best container to use is a wide-mouthed plastic demijohn with a screw-cap, but any large jar or crock will do. Take at least 1lb of sloes. The old-fashioned way is to prick them all over with a large needle, but that takes hours, so I put them into a food processor in small batches and whizz them to cut into the surface a bit.

Put them in your container, add 4 oz sugar and 2 pints gin (cheapo is fine). Seal and shake the container to dissolve the sugar. Leave in a cool dark place for 3 months, giving the container an occasional shake. Then strain and bottle.

Be warned, the sloe juice is very very messy. Every utensil that touches it will be stained and the stains won't wash out, you have to wait for them to wear off. The juice is really glutinous and sets like superglue. Cover your worktop with an old sheet or newspapers and wipe up/wash up spills immediately.

I also made a batch of blackberry gin. Make it the same way but no need to blitz the berries. Easier and quicker than sloe gin and also yummy.

MarsLady · 05/09/2005 22:51

thank you anorak. Will be turning up at your door just before Christmas for my bottle!

mumtosomeone · 05/09/2005 22:52

1pint of gin to 1 pint of sloes!

Tanzie · 05/09/2005 22:55

Damson gin is also yummy, and made the same way. My mother always added a teeny drop of almond extract to the sloe gin at the end to enhance the flavour. I always prick the sloes - tried putting them in the freezer once and the skins didn't burst.

Raspberry vodka also v yum.

mumtosomeone · 05/09/2005 22:57

never wizzed them before..I dont think!!
Dad and Granpa made it..I just drank it now and then!!!

craftydevil · 05/09/2005 22:57

Little purple berries, look a bit like blueberries, but more purple, and very sour, if you eat one it will feel like it has taken all the enamel off your teeth and all the fur off your tongue . Enjoy...

They grow quite high up.
