...when you're writing a letter applying for a job? The job advert says write to Jane Smith but how do I address her in the letter? Surely not "Dear Jane"? Or would it be "Dear Ms Smith"?

I would say 'Dear Ms Smith'

Hattie05 · 02/09/2005 08:56

I would say Dear Jane Smith, as you have been given her name.

beetroot - do you think I'd get it?

I am no expert. However, for a formal letter such as this, and to a person that you do not know personally, I would not use their first name as it sounds overfamiliar to me. If you needed to phone her up about anything then sure, ask to speak to Jane Smith, but for this I would use Ms Smith.

Thanks all. I really want to get this job - please send positive vibes.

Don't forget if you are starting the letter with Dear Ms...... it ends Yours Sincerely not Yours Faithfully!!!!!!
