Can you go to A & E for tooth ache?

I'm in the most excrutiating pain ever and cannot see a dentist until tomorrow. I usually have a high tolerance of pain but this is making me feel sick and like I could pass out.

To complicate matters I am almost 39 weeks pregnant so all I can take is paracetamol. I don't know what to do with myself. I feel quite desperate and cannot believe I have to suffer this much pain, potentially for another 20 hours. Give me childbirth over this anyday!

Do they have emergency dentists on A&E wards.

Could this be an abscess? How do I know?

no I don't hink they do. when dh had this problem we had to go all the way to Charing Cross which was the only hospital in west london that had emergency dental service. AND it was restricted hours only. Think I phoned all of the local hospitals till I found that out.

There should be an emergency dentist available at a local clinic.

You could phone your local hospital and ask. Ours doesn't have an A & E but does have the emergency dentist. Usually only early evening so you'd have to be quick.

I think it depends where you live.im in London and they have a brill Emergency dental dept at kings in camberwell and also at Guys.

Tiggiwinkle · 01/09/2005 18:54

The one at Kings is open till 9.00 in the evening I think. Guys is daytime only.

standard a&e's don't have emergency dentists, and they are often not best pleased when peolpe turn up with dental problems, they may prescribe medication (but will be reluctant to do so if pregnant) if you are registered with a dentist they should provide out of hours emergency cover - the area i work in we only do it until 9pm. call your dentist and there should be an message on the answer phone giving a number to call

Ladymuck · 01/09/2005 18:59

Have to say that our local hospital does have an emergency detist in its grounds (which A&E will dircet you to). Worth phoning your hospital?

beatie · 01/09/2005 22:14

I ended up ringing an emeregency doctor and getting a presecription for stronger pain killers. Fingers crossed they allow me to get sleep.
