My sister and I are planning on taking our children on a train ride tomorrow that will finish at london's Liverpool Street.
Does anyone know of any attractions, suitable for children from 2 to 6 years old, within walking distance (or short bus/tube ride) of Liverpool Street?
My sister seems to think there might be something at Tower Bridge but can't remember what!

Spitalfields market is great at the weekends - not sure about on a Friday, though. Museum of London (St. Paul's tube) isn't far, nor is Museum of Childhood (Bethnal Green). Think there's something called Tower Bridge Pageant - but no idea what it's like. Can still remember going on HMS Belfast at that age and loving it! Have fun.

Mckenzie, don't make the same mistake that I did, that is to (try to) visit the toy museum at Bethnal Green (which is fab), but closes on a Friday. We had a very frustrated, tearful 4 year old when we did that! Could only think of a trip to Hamleys to placate him.

For the Museum of Childhood Take the No. 8 bus from outside Liv St. direction of Bow and get off at Bethnal Green Tube. Or alternately go on the tube (central line)

Ther is a city farm at HAckney and one behind SPitalfields off Weaver Street.Brick Lane is a good walk wiht some fab new shops You can walk from Liv Street through Spitalfields MArket and up Brick Lane ending up in a Bagel Shop at the top where you can see the bagels being made in the back which my kids used to love. Also Whitechapel Art Gallery has a nice and used to be childfriendly cafe but dont know if it still is. Used to let my kids crawl around the installations without batting an eyelid

I'm feeling homesick now some days I really really miss our old home and the things we used to do. I especially miss all the markets and our Sunday walks around them all.
Sniff

Not to worry mckenzie...we've moved out west but it was a good thing and I do love it here> i have no regrets in the big picture. No harm in a little nostalgia I think!!

well, we've had a great day. Train into London, walk across London bridge and then a good hour or so on HMS Belfast followed by a picnic on the ship, bus back to Liverpool Street (a first for my son and he was very very excited) and tehn home. HMS Belfast is free for children

A mystery though re the train fares. An adult cheap day return was £5.10 (my son is only 2 so he goes free). My sister on the other hand had to pay for her 6 year old son and so she got a family cheap day return for her and said son for £4.30!!! Work that one out if you can.
Next time I travel on the train I shall have to pretend DS is older than he really is, that'll be a first

So glad you had a good day out.

You can still get the family discount even if the child is under 5, because I got sold it last time we went to Kew. It was the ticket seller who suggested it and I told her ds's age.

fisil · 01/08/2003 18:14

Glad you had a good day.

I get a family ticket - same weird thing. I pay £4.50 for just me, or £3.80 if I buy a child ticket for my son too. And have done so since he was a newborn. Once they made me lift his hat when he was asleep in the sling, to check that I had a real child there and was not just wearing a baby sling to save myself 70p! The age doesn't matter.

Paula1 · 04/08/2003 19:59

Mckenzie, at my station they always tell you if you're travelling with a child of any age to buy a ticket for them (which costs £1 for each child) and then you will get your ticket cheaper, I think if you have 2 kids at £1 then the fare is the same for the adult ifykwim

Just testing, new to this...really trying to find a pregnancy site...Any ideas?

There isn't a full market at Spitalfields on a Saturday and Brick Lane market won't be on either but it might be worth a look at the shops on Cheshire Street (off Brick Lane).

I would definitely recommend the city farms and the Toy Museum at Bethnal Green (one stop on the Central Line from Liverpool St, 1 minutes walk from Bethnal Green Tube Station)they have big sandpit in there at the moment so be warned!! Also, they have soft play area in the basement which is good for toddlers.
