Have not a clue about this procedure. What happens. Anything to be scared of? Dh anxious it'll affect his testosterone levels.

Just know we're happy with three little-uns and I have been on the pill for too long.

My dp has had the snip. My argument for him going was I brought his two darling sprogs into the world it was his turn for a bit of pain.

He too was very afraid and had heard a lot of horror stories but he was very brave and went ahead and although he was in a bit of pain initially he said it was more of a dull ache than throbbing pain!!!

He told me to post "it was nothing more than a little prick" His words not mine!!!

jamboure · 31/08/2005 20:54

DH had this done( i was also sterilised) and in all honestly he was amzing.

Never moaned once and his "wound" was like a papercut.

He did have a little discomfort and bruising for a few days but his crown jewels were and are in working order,

He had a tatoo done on his arm last week and said it was much more painful than having the snip

nooka · 31/08/2005 21:44

My dh has also had one - about 6 months ago now, I think. All seemed very low key. Referred by GP, counselled two weeks later, and the op was a couple of weeks after that. The only bit that was a pain was having to go to the main hospital to do the semen tests afterwards (he had the op at the local outpatients). He was a little fragile for maybe a week (and weirdly private about it), and then seemed pretty much back to normal. Doesn't seem to have had any lasting effect on him emotionally, but we were very sure that our family was complete.

So sounds pretty straightforward, then.

What are the 'horror stories', crazydazy? Maybe better not to ask.

dh had one in June - he said it was no problem at all and he was just a bit bruised for a couple of days afterwards. Nothing to be scared of (it's hardly childbirth is it?!).

magnolia1 · 31/08/2005 21:55

I need horror stories Ladies!! Dh would have the snip but I want another baby so thinking of scaring him into not having it done

expatinscotland · 31/08/2005 21:58

My BIL had one last year (DH getting one next year). He was walking back out of the office just after my sister had parked the car and then got comfortable with a magazine in the waiting room. He took a half day on Friday and was back at work on Monday.

Said it was easy peasy and the only pain he had was the local anesthetic. Hell, he didn't even have to take off his top.

Never had a problem since.

expatinscotland · 31/08/2005 22:00

Not a lot of horror stories these days, inglis, b/c it's such a simple procedure. In fact, it can be scalpel-less - the 'Chinese needle method' as it's called.

magnolia1 · 31/08/2005 22:06

ooooh that sounds good Will tell dh they use 'chinese needle method' That should scare him

swiperfox · 31/08/2005 22:07

Have just made dp read this whole thread Will be making an appointment for him very soon!!!

nooka · 31/08/2005 22:08

I think that some guys just find it psychologically difficult, and worry about the effect on sex and their "manliness". Really I don't think that it makes any difference - it's just that the semen doesn't come out of the end any more (I think it gets reabsorbed by the body).

expatinscotland · 31/08/2005 22:17

Not sure if they use the 'Chinese Needle Method' here, BIL had his done in the States. The urologist injected each testes with a local, then clamped off the vas deferns. Then injected it with some sort of plug, which allows semen to pass - but no sperm - once effective.

A similar procedure for females has become available in the US.

tubal implants

potty1 · 31/08/2005 22:23

Dh had it done after our third. He's had no problems at all with it. He wasn't too happy at the time as he was in plaster with a broken leg but, while he was off his feet.........

We found out a few weeks later that the GP who performed his snip is an alcoholic and was in a drying out clinic.....eek!!

magnolia1 · 31/08/2005 22:35

lol....

Oh bugger that chinese needle method is in usa but dh doesn't have to know that

expatinscotland · 31/08/2005 22:35

It's done here as well! It's called the 'No Scalpel Vasectomy'.

magnolia1 · 31/08/2005 22:38

But that sounds too tame, I want to scare him so saying no scalpel will be no good. Will have to stick with chinese needle method!!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2005 22:41

Am I missing something? If he doesn't want to father any more kids vasectomy is really the best way to go, honestly. It's cheap, safe and extremely effective. My own husband does not want to father any more kids - his body, his choice, I respect that - and has decided vasectomy is the way to go. He's talked to several men who've had it - hell, the GP he saw had it and was very pleased - and feels it's the procedure for us as a family.

beehive · 31/08/2005 22:58

my dh was reluctant to have his done, he was concerned about 'complications'

My only reply to that was 'COMPLICATIONS MY ARSE' (I have had major life saving abdominal surgery whilst pregnant with twins, a c section, two deliveries resulting in third degree tears, infections, mastitus, high blood pressure and pnd)

Basically, he wasn't given a choice and i even waited at the clinic whilst he had it done.

on a more serious note, it was fine, very quick and no complications (heaven forfend!)

Tortington · 31/08/2005 23:36

mine had it done and we ae still able to shag on a regular basis - that really what he want to know isnt it!

crazydazy · 01/09/2005 09:43

My uncle had it done and he developed an infection in the incision for which he had to have 2 weeks off work and a course of antibiotics....but like I say DP was fine and we were totally useless when it came to contraception so it was the best way forward for us.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2005 09:45

How long ago was this, crazy? The more common procedure now does not involve a scalpel.

crazydazy · 01/09/2005 09:49

About 5 years ago, it was him who scared my DP and put him off a bit but he still went.

TBH my uncle is a bit of a wet lettuce iykwim!!!

DP never went to the follow up so never got the all clear - dumb fool!!! He couldn't get the time off work so we still aren't certain there is no lead in the pencil but its coming up to 3 years in October and I haven't got pregnant so I think we are safe.

mrsjingles · 01/09/2005 09:50

Hi,

sorry if i'm being thick!! - my husbands on the waiting list for his 'vas'!
When we make love after he's clear, does no sperm come out at all then?? will he still have an orgasm if there is no sperm?

expatinscotland · 01/09/2005 10:00

He will still have a normal orgasm and ejaculate b/c sperm is only a very small percentage of the ejaculate's contents.

crazydazy · 01/09/2005 10:00

Yeah he's exactly the same. My DP calls it "tatty water" now - he's not very proud of it!!!!
