Hi, I really need to buy a new mattress as I'm waking up very stiff and in a lot of pain in the mornings. I don't want to make an expensive mistake choosing one though as I'm not sure whether to go for a hard or soft one. Which is best for posture? Tbh at the moment the thought of a hard mattress makes me grit my teeth but if it'll be best in the long run... Any advice would be appreciated, thanks .

The experts say you need to go into the shops and try them all out!

Embarrassing i know but its the wise thing to do.

I have also read somewhere that the ones that claim to be orthopaedic etc are a waste of money.

We recently got a new bed, and didn't follow the above advice . We ordered from Argos and just picked there most expensive matress which i think they call the deluxe. (obviously not at all expensive compared to other shops - being Argos!) We both thing its great but then anything would in comparison to our old bed.

Thanks Hattie, I suppose we will have to try some out. What worries me is the amount of times I've bought shoes which seemed perfectly comfortable in the shop, but crippled me when I got them home. I can just see myself doing the same thing with a huge mattress! (Not quite so easy to hide in the bottom of the wardrobe). As you say, anything should be an improvement on the one we've got.

i spent an afternoon lying on beds at the co-op last december. and eneded up with a £600 silentnight divan with sprung base. its is lovely to sleep in, even when i was 9months pregnant it was so lovely.

dh didnt want tp spend a lot, but we have gone through 3 different beds in 6years, so i really wanted to spend that bit extra and get a decent bed. and it was definatly worth it.

memoryfoam, even a cheaper version off ebay which is what I got has taken mine and dps aches away. 100% recommended, go to a bed shop see if it feels good.

We have a pocket sprung mattress and it's great. My parents got one for their spare bed, so we got to try before we bought! It's good because it doesn't matter that dh is a lot heavier than me, as it has individualy sprung pockets. It does feel quite hard when you first lie down, but it's actually very comfortable.

Mmm, got me thinking a bit now. We were just going to get a new mattress to go on our pine bed but perhaps we would be better off with a divan? Also, Charliecat, memoryfoam? Is that a mattress or something you put over your mattress to make it more comfy?

Its a mattress made of foam stuff that goes back into shape once your off of it...no springs digging in as there is none. Google it.
You can get memory foam toppers, things that go over your normal mattress. Never tryed that.

Tempur.

Most comfy bed I ever slept on. If I could afford a mattress I would. I have the pillows!

charliecat · 29/08/2005 10:38

Tepur is that memory foam stuff, are the pillows good, my mum was trying them out the other day in bed shop..what a sight!!!!

MarsLady · 29/08/2005 13:59

yes. My neck never aches now. Still wishing I could afford the mattress

pixel · 29/08/2005 21:47

Thanks everyone. I think we might try the pillows first and if they make a difference then save up for the mattress (just googled and the mattress would be worth twice as much as our car!). It sounds as if it might be worth the wait.

I got my Memory foam from Ebay, it is Fab and does the Job have a look at this

jennifersofia · 29/08/2005 23:51

Doesn't sound like you are going to, but I wouldn't advise going down the Ikea route. We got a medium expensive one but have been rather disappointed - hasn't held it's shape and is now a bit peaks and valleys.

pixel · 30/08/2005 23:17

Hadn't thought about IKEA as I've never been there but the ebay stuff looks VERY interesting, especially as I still have some money in my Paypal account just begging to be spent!

heres more

CountessDracula · 30/08/2005 23:26

I got a tempur one, had to send it back, neither dh or i could bear it. It was really hot, when you move in the night it is all lumpy as it is moulded to the position your body was in before. I would really recommend buying one with a money back guarantee in case you ahve the same prob

polly28 · 30/08/2005 23:59

We have the tempur mattress and pillows,we got them as we wanted the 30 dday trial thingy.Absolutely love them,my neck is never sore now, love it! They do take getting used to though.

Also have just bought a double mattress for dd(aged 14) from web ,mattressman.co.uk.
She prefers soft beds so we just chose the cheapest non turning one (£295).She loves it and I must admit it is really comfy .
