please help an e bay virgin understand the toing and froing of the bidding system...

put an item on for sale and i've had no bids all week!!! boo hoo! but got about 7 hours to go now...

i've just checked the status and there's been 4 bids... yipppee!!!

so i went to check the bidding history and the bidding has all been done by the same person... 4 times within a miniute! last night!...

the bidding history doesn't give the bid amount of each time... why would it not show the bid?... was the bidder trying to guess the reserve price i guess...?

i'm just curious that's all!!!

thank you all you knowledgable wheeler dealers out there!!!

Wow - an ebay question - can I also ask one???

Bought little mermaid for daughter - and it turned out to be black and white although all looks legit!!!

Is it just me being a techno wally or have I been scammed???

Have kept trying to email the guy who I bought it from but am just getting messages saying email could not be delivered to the address he used to send me a note.

Was only £20 but am quite cross as DD loves little mermaid and I thought was a bargain considering how much they cost on Amazon (old Disney DVDs that is).

Not sure about the last-minute bidding query but the b&w video (?) may have been a foreign one. European videos can play as black & whte on UK tv's. The email bouncing back is not a good sign though. You can always give him bad feedback if you can't resolve this

Tissy · 28/07/2003 08:49

bea, I think you're right, it was just someone trying to get to the reserve price.

Boe, I think you've been scammed- no-one would expect a video/ dvd to be in B+W, I'm sure Disney only release in colour. If he won't reply to your emails, then leave negative feedback in the strongest possible terms, and make sure that the Ebay "controllers" know about it. Doubt if there's much you can do to get your money back unless you paid by credit card.

Tissy · 28/07/2003 08:51

Didn't know that about the european videos, Tinker, but even so, if the seller was in the UK, I would expect it to play in colour.

soothepoo · 28/07/2003 09:05

Boe, if the video is VHS/PAL format then it should play on a UK video. Can you remember how the seller described it? Have you looked at the seller's previous feedback?

Boe · 28/07/2003 09:50

It said nothing about what colour it would be but there is no was I would have bought it if I had known - I am gonna go back onto Ebay and try and do something about it - leave a comment I suppose.

As I said everything about it looked legit - I am gonna stick to paying inflated prices on Amazon for Disney stuff now!!

misdee · 28/07/2003 10:15

£20 for disney dvds???

u're being ripped off on amazon as well love. try yourt local supermarkets etc, as they always have promotions on disney dvds, even the older ones!!

saying that, i'm still hunting for snow white on dvd. there is a bloke on ebay who sells disney dvds for around 13quid, p+p free. i'll have to try and find his name again, i got toy story, lilo and stitch and peter pan from him. i'll let u know when i remember his ebay name.

Boe · 28/07/2003 11:04

Got Snow White from Amazon - DP bought USA version but works in DDs DVD player.

I am just not gonna trust things like Ebay if this is what can happen. I do buy them from supermarket (specialy as £10 off if buy 2 at the moment!!) also but am trying to get old ones that are not being released at the moment.

Tissy · 28/07/2003 12:01

Boe, Ebay is mostly fine, I've never been ripped off, but you do need to be a little careful to catch a bargain...

always check the sellers feedback before bidding- if he/she has loads of recent feedback saying they're wonderful they should be fine

always read the item description carefully, and consider what they might have left out! If you have any doubts, don't bid. You can email a seller with queries, don't bid if you don't get an answer

make sure the p+p costs are stated up front- some people will charge a fortune for postage, bumping up their profit that way

set yourself an upper limit and stick to it...it is easy to get carried away at the last minute if you really want something. Remember to include the postage costs in your limit, or you could end up costing yourself more than a trip to the shops.

leese · 28/07/2003 18:36

bea - let me know what you're selling - I'll go and place some bids to get it up a bit for you!!!........then again, might actually have to buy whatever it is.............
E-mail soon.....

leese · 28/07/2003 18:38

PS bea - why would the person try to guess the reserve price? Is this not indicated on the sale page?

Tissy · 28/07/2003 20:14

For some reason they keep the reserve secret!

Mummysurfer · 28/07/2003 20:51

Don't let one bad eBay experience put you off. I've bought (and sold) quite alot of stuff and not had a problem. Follow Tissy's good advice and you should be fine.
Good luck

Play247.com is usually a good place to get DVDs cheap online, too.
