Where and How do you store kids books?

In our playroom we are always drowing in books that end up covering the floor no matter which different ways I try to store them.

What do you do and how many do you have?

We have LOADS as I love books and want my kids to really enjoy reading too but not sure if we have too many.

we have bookcases!! loads of them for our books, now ds has a big one for himself.
Yes, the books fall off from time to time, but he has learnt how to hold the books on the shelf as he gets one down, and how to put books in the bookcase properly.

He loves his books, and has become a voracious reader (he'll be 6 next week). I want him to look after his books, and appreciate them. We are currently reading my paddington books which were bought for me when I was 7. They have survived 37 years of love and reading.

Used to have bookcase but I was worried about Dd pulling it over on herself. DD has loads of books (2-3 hundred at least) and it was getting to be a very heavy piece of furniture. So instead we now have some big storage boxes and the books go in there. When we move we will have one in the corner of the living room, one in the garden room and the rest in her bedroom.

We have a big Ikea unit downstairs which has one cupboard full of books and then upstairs Dd2 has a large wardrobe which has shelves behind the 3rd door and 2 of those are used for books.

We also have them scattered all over the house.

You can never have too many books.

My kids keep their books in:

the bookcase
under the bed
on the bed
under the pillows
in the box at the bottom of the bed
in the soft toy bx
in the kitchen
under the rugs
in the DTs toybox
in my bookcase
behind the couch....

do I need to go on?

we have a lot of books for ds and they are stored on a bookcase in the living room. He also has a couple of shelves in his bedroom then the ones I would like to keep etc are stored on top of the shelves where he cant reach. He is 22mths and generally loves reading his books although sometimes can be a little rough handed..lol

Hello Married Lady Our books are in all the places that MarsLady has mentioned - and also the bathroom, our bedroom, under the settee, in the car...

But if I had £90 to spare I would be oh-so-tempted by this which I saw in my Mini Marvellous catalogue the other day. But that might just be the Librarian in me...

Skribble · 23/08/2005 21:58

The kids have a selection in a plastic crate beside their beds which seems to be easier for them than book shelves when in bed, the rest are spread around their rooms but are supposed to be on bookcase. I find it hard enough to get them to put books on shelves never mind in alphabetical order.

stitch · 23/08/2005 22:03

i have limited the kids to two shelves in the bookcases. but i dont buy them books anymore, well, only rarely, as prefer to get them from the library.

Easy · 24/08/2005 14:07

I know stitch, but there is noting like getting a brand new book, being the first to open it's pagesd, the smell of new books.

And some books you want to keep forever.

Sorry my secret obsession is peeking out.

SleepySuzy · 24/08/2005 14:10

Know what you mean, Easy

tassis · 24/08/2005 14:13

I want those lovely wooden display boxes like they have in libraries. I keep hinting to my dad about making them. Do you know what I mean? You can get them in train shapes which ds would love and there are bits to sit between the carriages...

THere's a "kindercar" in the Galt educational catalogue which is GORGEOUS for book storage but costs £209!!!!

Bozza · 24/08/2005 14:19

Mine keep the bulk on shelves in their bedrooms. The end of DD's (which is only small - 3 shelves) is tucked behind her cot to prevent it being pulled over. I see hulababy mentioned this issue. DS had a billy bookcase from Ikea which is taller than me. His books are on the lower shelves with baskets of toys on the higher shelves. This is fastened to the wall. Then we have a cupboard downstairs with a smaller selection in including the library books and a basket under our bed for those early mornings.

One bookcase downstairs in the kitchen (big kitchen so one end is like an additional day time living space)

and in bookcase each in their bedrooms.

Don't you find that as they get older they grow out of certain books and so you can then pass them on? (to Oxfam etc)

Just needs regular culling surely?

QueenEagle · 24/08/2005 14:26

We have seven bookcases in various places in our house, all crammed with books.

They are working their way through all my kids but the older ones complain they haven't many to read so they use the library a lot too.

Bozza · 24/08/2005 14:38

hmc - when DD was born I culled DS's books into her room. When Dnephew was born I culled the soft books onto him. DD is 15 months so not yet really outgrown any board books.

roisin · 27/08/2005 19:32

My dad made me some flip boxes for large picture books, which are fab. (Similar to what you find in a library, but smaller.) Trying to store picture books on a bookshelf caused me endless frustration, as they would all collapse and fall in a heap. The flip boxes made them far more easily accessible for the kids themselves.

Regular format paperbacks and hardbacks go on their rapidly expanding bookshelves ... organised a-z by author ...! Obsessive, me?!

Weatherwax · 27/08/2005 20:26

My dd1 wants you to know that she is a book worm and therefore we have books in every cranny. I've tried the local library but we have more books than they do . Argos are doing some deep bookcases at the moment and they are deep enough to be double stacked. I am getting very good at putting these together!
